The Speedtest website of the Vietnam Internet Network Information Center (VNNIC) has recently added a category to evaluate the quality of domestic 5G networks. Data from September 2024 to February 2025 - coinciding with the time Viettel officially launched its commercial 5G service - shows that the 5G network in Vietnam achieved an average download speed of 187.58 Mbps and an upload speed of 34.87 Mbps, three times faster than 4G.
VNNIC's tool also provides detailed information on 5G network speeds by network operator and region. Specifically, the median download speed on VNPT's 5G network reached 157.17 Mbps, while Viettel's was superior with 226.27 Mbps, nearly 1.5 times faster. MobiFone has not yet commercialized 5G services, so there is no data yet.
By region, Da Nang is leading in 5G speed with 324.05 Mbps, significantly higher than Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City (ranging from 144-158 Mbps). The city is not only an attractive tourist destination but also emerging as an important information technology center, contributing to enhancing digital experiences and promoting online business.
According to a representative of Viettel Da Nang, the 5G network has covered more than 95% of the city's population. This is the result of a cooperation agreement between Viettel and Da Nang City to promote digital transformation, build a smart city and support socio-economic development.
Director of Viettel Da Nang Huynh Ngoc Thuong said that Viettel is the first network operator to launch the largest 5G network in Vietnam and plans to expand coverage in 2025 to meet growing demand. He emphasized: "Viettel 5G has a speed of up to 1Gbps, 10 times faster than 4G, with almost zero latency. This optimizes AI applications, from real-time data processing to personalizing user experiences. With the message 'Viettel 5G - New Life', we are committed to providing superior connection services, promoting a more modern and convenient digital life".
Since the commercialization of the 5G network, mobile Internet speed in Vietnam has made a leap forward, ranking among the highest in the world. By February 2025, Viettel recorded about 5.5 million 5G subscribers, while Vinaphone also reached about 3 million subscribers, showing the strong development of this technology in Vietnam.
