(CLO) Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro on Saturday could only see his wife off at the airport in Brasilia to attend the inauguration of US President-elect Donald Trump next Monday, instead of accompanying her due to an exit ban.
Earlier, Brazil's Supreme Court on Thursday rejected Mr. Bolsonaro's request to temporarily restore his passport so he could attend the inauguration, determining that Mr. Bolsonaro currently holds no office that would allow him to represent Brazil at the event.
Judge Alexandre de Moraes also said in his ruling that the far-right leader had not sufficiently demonstrated to the court that he had been invited. Mr Bolsonaro told reporters at the airport that he was “frustrated” and “still shocked” by the decision.

"Obviously it would be good for me to go. President Trump would really like it," Bolsonaro said. About 20 supporters of the former Brazilian president were present at the airport where Michelle Bolsonaro boarded the flight to the United States.
Mr Bolsonaro is an open admirer of Mr Trump. Like the incoming US president, the former Brazilian president has expressed doubts about his country’s electoral system and refused to budge.
Mr Bolsonaro, who is facing widespread investigations including over his bid to stay in office despite losing the 2022 election, had his passport confiscated by federal police last February because he was considered a flight risk. He denies the allegations against him.
The current Brazilian President, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who was not formally invited, will not attend Mr Trump's inauguration. Brazil's ambassador to the US, Maria Luiza Viotti, will attend.
