Sea crabs labeled as Ca Mau are sold a lot on Saigon sidewalks, priced at 100,000-150,000 VND per kilogram, one-third the price in stores.
Recently, crabs with roe and meat labeled as Ca Mau crabs have been dumped and sold by traders on sidewalks on many streets in Ho Chi Minh City. The prices of these types of crabs are advertised by sellers at 100,000-150,000 VND per kilogram, which is one-third of the prices of seafood stores. Particularly for large crabs, weighing 500-600 grams each, the price is about 200,000 VND per kilogram - an unprecedentedly cheap price for crabs with roe on the market.
Mr. Hung, a crab seller on Thong Nhat Street (Go Vap District), said that the small crabs (4 crabs per kilogram) are being sold for 25,000-35,000 VND each, or 100,000-140,000 VND per kilogram. He said that these are Ca Mau crabs, which are farmed so they are sold cheaply.
Similarly, another seller on Pham Van Dong Street (HCMC) explained that crabs are in harvest season, the quantity sold to the market is large, so the price has dropped sharply.

While choosing to buy crabs with roe for 200,000 VND per kg (2 crabs) on Thong Nhat Street, Ms. Hoa was surprised because they were rolled up in many layers of string up to 250 grams. "Buying two crabs weighs 1 kg, the string alone accounts for 500 grams. In fact, 200,000 VND only buys half a kilo of crab - not a cheap price," she said.
In response to this question, the seller explained that tying the crabs with thick, large strings is to keep the product moist and fresh for a long time and to avoid breaking the crab legs during transportation. "Because the crabs are tied with many layers of strings, we sell them at half or a third the price of seafood stores, but the quality remains the same," explained Mr. Hoang, a seller on Pham Van Dong Street.

According to the owner of a seafood shop on Phan Dang Luu Street (Binh Thanh District), it is difficult to find Ca Mau crabs at super cheap prices, sold everywhere on the sidewalk like that. He said that 500 gram crabs, priced at 600,000 VND per kg, are very rare. Crab meat costs between 380,000-450,000 VND per kg.
The small crabs, priced at around 100,000 VND per kilogram, are mostly collected by traders from different provinces in the Mekong Delta to Ho Chi Minh City, according to the shop owner.
In addition, to offer super cheap prices to attract customers, street vendors often tie large, water-absorbent strings to cheat the weight. He advised people to consider carefully and go to reputable stores to buy genuine products.
Ca Mau sea crab is a famous delicious specialty (lots of roe, firm meat), of which Nam Can crab is considered the best in the country, selling for several hundred thousand to one million VND per kilogram, depending on the type and time. Crabs are raised for about 4-5 months to be harvested.
