(Dan Tri) - A young teacher in Ho Chi Minh City breathed a sigh of relief when a parent showed her how to deal with students asking for lucky money at the beginning of the year.
Before returning to school for the new year on February 5, sharing on a forum, Ms. Nguyen Ngoc Lien, a junior high school teacher at a private school in Ho Chi Minh City, was concerned about the fact that students often ask for lucky money at the beginning of the year.
Ms. Lien said that in the first days of returning to school, students often call her "lucky money, teacher". Last year, Ms. Lien gave lucky money of 20,000 or 50,000 VND, but she teaches many classes with hundreds of students, so it costs millions of VND. That is not a small amount of money for a young teacher who has just graduated from school and is living in a rented house.
"Don't think I'm calculating, but at the beginning of the school year, when students ask me for lucky money, I'm in a difficult situation. If I don't give lucky money, I'm afraid of being labeled as a "candy girl", but if I give lucky money, I'll probably have to eat instant noodles for the rest of the month. Does anyone have a way to help me get out of this situation?", Ms. Nguyen Ngoc Lien shared.
This year, Ms. Lien received a Tet bonus of more than 10 million VND, but it was only enough to cover part of the cost of the trip back to her hometown in Thanh Hoa.
After Ms. Lien's confession, many other teachers also expressed their feelings of "students asking for lucky money". Students sometimes just ask for it to create a good atmosphere at the beginning of the year, but teachers cannot help but feel pressured.
A 27-year-old teacher in Tan Binh, Ho Chi Minh City expressed: "Last year, I prepared nearly 100 lucky money envelopes worth 20,000-50,000 VND for students, which is more than 3 million VND. The amount is not large, but for many teachers, this is also a large amount when Tet has covered many expenses."
Faced with this feeling of teachers, many people have shared tips to help teachers overcome the "block" of giving lucky money at the beginning of the year. Many people have shown teachers how they can chat, ask about their students or sing songs to them at the beginning of the year instead of giving lucky money.
Ms. Le Thu Xuyen, in Go Vap, Ho Chi Minh City, told about the "trick" that teachers can use to give lucky money to students by writing wishes, compliments or coupons printed with words of luck for the beginning of the year to give to students.
On normal days, teachers and students are often busy and may forget to praise their students. Now more than ever, this is the time to give positive feedback to students. Students will be very happy to receive such encouragement.
Ms. Xuyen learned this method from her daughter's teacher. Many years ago, when she was in 7th grade, her daughter received a lucky money envelope containing a note of praise from a subject teacher. She praised her for being unique and the most affectionate student she had ever met, along with a thank you "for being her student."
This compliment helped her gain more confidence and cleared up previous misunderstandings between her and her teacher. Now, her child is in 12th grade but still keeps the special lucky money envelope from that year from her teacher.
"We often assume that lucky money is money, but sometimes for students, a positive comment or compliment from a teacher is more valuable than any gift. Teachers feel less pressured and students are happy," said Ms. Xuyen.
In particular, according to this mother, teachers giving lucky money with compliments is not necessarily only for Tet. Teachers can give lucky money to students with words of encouragement and motivation in teaching activities and daily communication. Teachers and students can encourage and give each other more loving words at any time.
Many years ago, when he was teaching at Van Lang Secondary School, Ho Chi Minh City, before the first day of school in the new year, teacher Hoang Long Trong always prepared hundreds of lucky money envelopes to "welcome" his students.
In the red envelopes, there are envelopes with money, envelopes with wishes and compliments from teachers to students. Money or compliments, according to Mr. Trong, students are very happy. Through this bonding activity, teachers and students become closer and more open-minded.
At the beginning of the new year, teachers and schools always have many ways to create joy and excitement for students entering the first days after Tet. There are lucky money, gifts, games, and lucky draws, but according to a leader of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, teachers should not forget to praise and encourage their students.
This person emphasized that compliments and positive evaluations from teachers have a great impact on students, and can even "save" their future. And conversely, negative words and comments can also destroy students.
According to research by American psychologist Elizabeth B. Hurlock - one of the pioneers in researching the effects of praise - the use of positive measures such as praise and rewards can have a positive effect on students' learning performance, creating motivation and enhancing positive spirit in the educational process.
In the school environment, receiving praise from teachers helps students gain more strength to develop. Praise helps students feel more confident about themselves, is the motivation that makes them more powerful, understand their own value and become more resilient.
