Born into a poor family, Pham Thi Kim Cuong was taught free by her teacher. Since then, she has nurtured the dream of becoming a teacher with the wish to open a charity class to teach poor students for free.
Teacher Kim Cuong's students are from disadvantaged backgrounds, whose parents are low-income workers and do not have time to teach or tutor their children after school.
Teacher helps poor students achieve their dreams
Ms. Kim Cuong is currently a literature teacher at Kim Dong Secondary School (Da Nang City). Despite her busy work schedule, she still arranges time to teach in a charity class.
Talking about her journey of teaching disadvantaged children, she feels this is a meaningful work in her life.
"I am very happy to help the children, I am happy to see them studying hard and making progress every day. Even though they have grown up and matured, many of the children I have taught still regularly contact me and share their lives with me. That is what makes me happiest, I feel that my work is meaningful to the community and is the motivation for me to continue to stick with disadvantaged students," she shared.
In previous years, Ms. Kim Cuong used her private home as a place to teach classes, but with her passion and desire to teach more students, in 2023 she asked the People's Committee of Hoa Thuan Dong Ward (Hai Chau District) to support a teaching space to expand her classroom.
With support for a teaching location, she "persuaded" her husband to invest in tables, chairs, blackboards, televisions, etc. to make the classroom more spacious.
She contacted her colleagues and invited teachers to teach at the charity class and received enthusiastic agreement from everyone. Thanks to that, the zero-cost class was expanded and named "Wings of Dreams".
The class teaches three subjects: math, literature, and English for students from grades 6 to 9, taught regularly every Saturday and Sunday morning.
Currently, the "Wings of Dreams" class is open at two locations: Hai Chau 2 Ward Cultural, Sports and Community Learning Center (Hai Chau District) and Hoa Thuan Dong Ward Community Cultural Activity House (Hai Chau District).
Besides, in the summer, Ms. Kim Cuong and other teachers organize for the students to learn skills such as swimming, martial arts, chess...

"Second home"
His mother left when he was young, his father worked as a security guard and was often away from home, so for Ly Thien Bao (7th grade student at Kim Dong Secondary School), Ms. Kim Cuong's charity class is like his second home.
"I have been studying here for nearly two years. I always look forward to the weekend so I can go to class with my friends. Studying here is fun and easy to understand. The teachers here teach very well and enthusiastically. Thanks to that, my literature score has improved significantly. I am very grateful to the teachers," said Thien Bao.
Having been taught by teacher Kim Cuong in a charity class, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Thu (30 years old, living in Ho Chi Minh City) shared: "Knowing my difficult circumstances, she taught me for free. She also helped and encouraged me a lot during my studies. Although many years have passed, I always remember and am grateful for her kindness."
