Surgery for the injury of striker Bui Vi Hao, who is playing for the Vietnamese national team, was performed at Nam Saigon International General Hospital on the afternoon of April 3.

He suffered a serious injury during a training session of B.Binh Duong Club to prepare for the quarter-finals of the 2024-2025 National Cup.

MRI results showed that the 22-year-old striker had a WEBER C ankle fracture, a fractured lateral malleolus, a torn tibial-fibular joint, and a torn medial collateral ligament.

According to the assessment of doctor Truong Cong Dung - who accompanied the Vietnam U20 team to the 2017 U20 World Cup in Korea, Bui Vi Hao's injury is more serious than the broken leg injury of naturalized striker Nguyen Xuan Son at the 2024 ASEAN Cup.

"Not only did Bui Vi Hao's ankle ligament break, but his fracture also went across the joint, easily causing instability and loss of balance later on," said Dr. Truong Cong Dung.

Therefore, Dr. Truong Cong Dung and his team had to plan and perform the surgery very carefully to help him recover as best as possible.

Dr. Dung said the surgery was successful after 3 hours. He said: "Bui Vi Hao's injury was as predicted. We performed the surgery as planned. That was combining the fibula with a locking splint, fixing the tibiofibular brace and suturing the torn ligament."

Not only participating in the surgery, orthopedic specialist Nguyen Thuy Song Ha - manager of the sports medicine department at Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine - will also be responsible for monitoring Bui Vi Hao's post-operative recovery.

With this injury, Bui Vi Hao is expected to take about 10 months to recover. He will not be able to join the Vietnamese team to play against Malaysia in the second match of Group F of the final qualifying round of the 2027 Asian Cup on June 10.

In addition, he will not be able to join the Vietnam U22 team to participate in the 2026 AFC U23 Championship qualifiers in September and the 33rd SEA Games at the end of the year.
