People's Artist Tuong Vi (full name Truong Tuong Vi) was born in 1938 in Tam Ky City, Quang Nam Province, in a well-educated family, but no one was in the arts. However, from a young age, Tuong Vi showed her talent and passion for singing.

At the age of 16, after the shock of her grandmother dying from a bomb, Tuong Vi enlisted in the army and became a nurse at the 108 Military Hospital to treat soldiers. In 1956, she transferred to the General Political Department's song and dance troupe and began to study vocal music. Here, she clearly revealed her clear, clear soprano voice, as clear as a bird's song.

In 1962, the female artist passed the entrance exam to the Vocal Department of the Hanoi Conservatory of Music and graduated in 1967. In 1974, she studied for 4 years at the Sofia Conservatory of Music, Bulgaria. Thanks to that, People's Artist Tuong Vi received formal training in vocal music, mastering complex classical vocal techniques.

During the war years, the female singer followed the art troupe to perform in many places on the battlefields, using her singing to drown out the sound of bombs. She also recorded many records and became famous on the radio of the Voice of Vietnam with a series of immortal songs such as: The sound of the Ta Lu lute, The girl sharpening spikes, You are the Po Lang flower, The girl of the La river, The bird that reports good news, The ferryman on the Po Co river, The shadow of the Kơ-nia tree, Lenin stream... The female artist's singing voice is diverse, performing many genres of music, from semi-classical, revolutionary to folk.

With her gifted and skillful singing voice, she was also chosen to perform in many countries around the world such as: Soviet Union, Poland, Chile, Cuba... She was also one of the few singers who performed many times before President Ho Chi Minh.

In addition to singing, People's Artist Tuong Vi is also a musician. She composed many songs such as: Our Flight Team, My Homeland is the Sea, I Listen to the Voice of Life... In addition to revolutionary music, she also composed children's music such as: Life Gives Me Happy Notes, Don't Be Sad in My Heart, Baby's Dream is Peace ...

Later, she became a lecturer at the Vietnam National Academy of Music. During her time there, she trained many famous artists such as Dong Quang Vinh, Giang Son, Khanh Thi, etc. In addition, she was also a member of the Executive Committee of the Musicians' Association from 1962 to 1982.

During her career, People's Artist Tuong Vi sang many songs, but the classic and most famous one is "The Girl Who Sharpens Spikes" . When mentioning "The Girl Who Sharpens Spikes" , everyone remembers People's Artist Tuong Vi. Although she was not the first to perform the song, it was People's Artist Tuong Vi who used her voice to bring "The Girl Who Sharpens Spikes" to a new height, creating a big buzz with both professionals and the public.

With her contributions, artist Tuong Vi was awarded the title of Meritorious Artist and the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in 1984. In 1993, she was awarded the title of People's Artist. She was also awarded the Third Class Military Exploit Medal, Third Class Labor Medal, Second Class Military Exploit Medal, and First Class Resistance Medal by the State. People's Artist Tuong Vi is also a rare artist whose name is listed in the Vietnam Military Encyclopedia, published in 1996.

In 1992, People's Artist Tuong Vi opened a music class for orphans, then established the Center for the Arts of Love, with the aim of nurturing and training the arts for disabled and orphaned children. Her Center for the Arts of Love was also the place honored to receive visits from General Vo Nguyen Giap when he was still alive.

In her final years, People's Artist Tuong Vi lived with her son Tran Hung (Ngoc Anh's ex-husband) in Ngu Hanh Son district, Da Nang city. Although she suffered from many old-age diseases such as diabetes, blood pressure and many other diseases, she is still steadfastly fighting the disease. She has to receive regular treatment at Da Nang C Hospital. When she was still healthy, her greatest wish was to build 2 stages in Quang Nam and Da Nang so that the children at the center could have the opportunity to practice, perform, and keep up the "fire of the profession" to serve the public.

Last March, she was visited and given gifts by the "Mai Vang Tri An" program of the Nguoi Lao Dong newspaper. She was taken care of attentively and thoughtfully by her children and grandchildren during her old age.

Singer Ngoc Anh herself, although divorced, still has respect for "mother" Tuong Vi. Ngoc Anh even invited her mother-in-law to visit the US with her grandchild, but she could not go. Occasionally, her grandson Ben Tran (son of Ngoc Anh and Tran Hung) still returns to Vietnam or calls to ask about his grandmother. Most recently, she and her husband John Gallander went to Da Nang to visit Tuong Vi's mother and she was very happy to see her daughter-in-law again.

In her farewell message to her mother-in-law on her personal page, Ngoc Anh wrote: "Goodbye, dear mother. Thank you for always missing me and my grandson Ben Tran. We couldn't come back in time to say goodbye to you, but we will come back to visit you often as we have always visited you in the past months. We love you so much!"
