People's Artist Tuong Vy passed away on the afternoon of May 11. She passed away at the age of 86. On her personal page, singer Ngoc Anh (Triad 3A), former daughter-in-law of People's Artist Tuong Vi, bid farewell to her. "Goodbye, my dear mother. Thank you for always missing me and my grandchildren. We couldn't come back in time to say goodbye, but we will come back to visit you often as we have always visited you in the past months. We love you so much, mother," the singer shared.

Singing over the bombs

People's Artist Tuong Vi's real name is Truong Tuong Vi. She was born in 1938 in Tam Ky, Quang Nam, in a family with no one in the arts, her maternal grandparents were rich farmers, her father was a teacher. At the age of 16, after her maternal grandmother died from a French bomb, Tuong Vi joined the army in 1954 and became a nurse at the 108 Military Hospital. In 1956, she transferred to the General Political Department's song and dance troupe and began to study vocal music.

In 1962, she was admitted to the Communist Party of Vietnam, the same year she passed the entrance exam to the vocal department at the Hanoi Conservatory of Music and graduated in 1967. She then attended a short-term composition course organized by the Ministry of Culture and Information. In 1974, she studied for 4 years at the Sofia Conservatory of Music, Bulgaria.

During the war years, she followed the art troupe to perform in many places on the battlefields. People's Artist Tuong Vi's singing had the power to drown out the devastating sound of bombs on the battlefield.

Wherever there were soldiers, the group stopped to sing for the soldiers to listen and encourage them. Any place could become a stage for a performance. Sometimes they sang in the middle of the forest, the stage was a few stones stacked up; sometimes the stage was set up right on the bank of a stream, and sometimes the hood of a car was used as a stage.

Every time they heard that Tuong Vi and the General Political Department's Art Troupe were performing in Quang Binh, the soldiers traveled nearly 30km to listen to the singing, watch the performance, and then leave again... Someone came to see Tuong Vi and said that when they were in the deep forest, every time they heard Tuong Vi singing on the radio, even if they were sleeping, they had to wake up immediately.

Tuong Vi is famous for many songs on the radio of Voice of Vietnam, such as Ta Lu zither (Huy Thuc), The girl sharpening spikes (Hoang Hiep, poem by Lo Mo Y Choi), You are Po Lang flower (Duc Minh), The girl of La river (Doan Nho), The bird that brings good news (Dam Thanh), The ferryman on Po Co river (Cam Phong, poem by Mai Trang), The shadow of Kơ-nia tree (Phan Thanh Nam, poem by Ngoc Anh), Lenin stream (Ha Te, Hoang Dam), The stream and the sun (Vinh An), The sound of forest birds (Nguyen Nhung), Far away (Nguyen Tai Tue), Winter coat (Do Nhuan)...

In particular, the two songs "The Girl Sharpening Spikes" and "The Sound of the Ta Lu Guitar" became the two most successful songs of her career.

When mentioning The Girl Who Sharpens Spikes, everyone remembers People's Artist Tuong Vi. Although she was not the first person to perform the song, it was People's Artist Tuong Vi who used her voice to bring The Girl Who Sharpens Spikes to a new height, creating a big buzz with both professionals and the public.

As soon as she read the lyrics of Co gai vot troi, People's Artist Tuong Vi imagined the scene of the Central Highlands mountains and forests filled with animals and plants. From there, she created her own version by adding a staccato head voice note that imitates the sound of birds chirping, adding a colorful touch to the song, making it fresh, full of life and full of musicality.

Thanks to that, The Girl Who Sharpens Spikes has become an immortal song and left a deep impression on the audience for more than half a century. This is also a hit song associated with the name of People's Artist Tuong Vi.

Possessing a coloratura soprano voice and the most perfect vocal technique, People's Artist Tuong Vy is considered one of the "legendary" voices of Vietnamese music in the 20th century. She is also considered the singer with the highest voice of that period. She sings many genres such as folk songs and revolutionary music. People's Artist Tuong Vi has performed many times before President Ho Chi Minh, heads of state around the world and high-ranking leaders of the Party, State and army.

Diligently helping poor children in special circumstances

In addition to singing, Tuong Vi is also a musician who composed many songs such as Phi Doi Ta Xuat Kich, Que Huong Anh La Bien Ca, Em Nghe Nghe Tieng Doi..., children's songs such as Doi Cho Em Nhung Tot Nhac Vui, Trai Tim Oi Dung Buon, Uoc Mo Cua Be La Hoa Binh... Later, she became a lecturer at the Vietnam National Academy of Music and trained many famous artists such as Dong Quang Vinh, Giang Son, Khanh Thi,... She was also a member of the Executive Committee of the Vietnam Musicians Association (1962 - 1982). Member of the Central Executive Committee of the Vietnam Literature and Arts Union (1962 - 1982).

In 1992, when she met some orphans, she started a music class for them. Later, with the support and donations of many people, she established the Center for Love Arts. The center is under the Vietnam Red Cross Society, with the purpose of nurturing and training arts for disabled and orphaned children. Currently, the center has 3 facilities in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang, with Tuong Vi as director. The children at the center have performed in many places, many of them have passed the entrance exams to art schools across the country.

Ha Chuong, a blind student here, was the valedictorian of the Hanoi Conservatory of Music. Her Center for the Arts of Love was also honored to receive visits from General Vo Nguyen Giap when he was still alive.

The late musician Phan Huynh Dieu once said about People's Artist Tuong Vi: "Tuong Vi is a rare Vietnamese artist whose name is listed in the Vietnam Military Encyclopedia published in 1996. With all her kindness and intelligence, Tuong Vi founded 3 Centers of Love Arts to join with musicians, artists, dedicated teachers, and philanthropists at home and abroad to welcome unfortunate, poor people with musical talent... Giving them beautiful colors around them so they can rise up and live happily with the hope of a brighter future."

She was awarded the title of Meritorious Artist in 1984. In the same year, she was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. In 1993, she was awarded the title of People's Artist. She was also awarded the Third Class Military Exploit Medal, Third Class Labor Medal, Second Class Military Exploit Medal, and First Class Resistance Medal by the State.
