Green transformation - Sustainable direction of electronics, machinery and supporting industries

Báo Quốc TếBáo Quốc Tế22/03/2025

Electronics, machinery and supporting industries are key industries that contribute greatly to the GDP structure. However, to develop sustainably towards green transformation, businesses need to integrate and be ready to overcome challenges.

Key role in the economy

According to data from the Ministry of Industry and Trade, in 2024, the electronics industry's export turnover will reach 126.5 billion USD, contributing more than 1/3 to the country's total export turnover (405 billion USD).

Specifically, the computer, electronics and components industry reached 72.56 billion USD, up 26.6%; while phones and components reached 53.9 billion USD, up 2.9% compared to 2023. This figure shows that consumer demand is recovering, while the production capacity of domestic suppliers is also improving.

According to the Vietnam Mechanical Engineering Association (VAMI), the country has about 3,100 mechanical engineering enterprises with 53,000 production facilities, accounting for nearly 30% of the total number of processing and manufacturing enterprises in Vietnam. The domestic mechanical, machinery and equipment industry has gradually mastered and increased the localization rate, creating momentum to promote the development of other industries, thereby directly and indirectly creating jobs for millions of workers.

In the context of the electronics and machinery industry reaping many achievements, the supporting industry has a close relationship, not only playing the role of providing input materials but also creating added value, enhancing the competitiveness of products, promoting the industrialization and modernization of the country.

However, according to Vietnam Briefing, compared to other countries in the Southeast Asian region, the number of enterprises participating in supporting industry production in Vietnam is low, only about 500 enterprises, accounting for 0.2% of the total of about 1 million enterprises. Therefore, Vietnam's supporting industry still has a lot of room to exploit and advantages to make further breakthroughs.

In addition, participation in many free trade agreements, new government policies, and the appearance of forums and exhibitions promoting electronic products, machinery and supporting industries are expected to create the premise for businesses in the industry to become the locomotives leading the economy.

Sustainable direction

Currently, more than 130 countries have committed to net zero emissions by 2050, including Vietnam. Therefore, green transformation is not only an inevitable need but also a committed direction for a sustainable economic development.

To realize the goal of green transformation, domestic enterprises need to find solutions to produce smart, high-value export products, which is even more important for the electronics, machinery, and industrial sectors.

In particular, in the era of the rise of the entire political - economic - social apparatus, it requires businesses operating in the field to focus on investing in technology, regularly updating the most modern and latest trends; improving and selecting human resources; strengthening cooperation to learn from businesses from countries leading the green transformation trend.

Currently, traditional industrial parks are facing problems of high energy consumption, environmental pollution, poor data management, ineffective waste and resource management, leading to waste and pollution... Applying 4.0 technology can solve these problems and create a more sustainable and smarter future for industrial parks.

However, the General Statistics Office said that over 30% of supporting technology enterprises nationwide in general are still using completely manual control equipment, over 50% use semi-automatic equipment.

Notably, only over 10% of enterprises use automation equipment and less than 10% of supporting industry enterprises use robots in production lines. This is a big challenge for Vietnam's Electronics, Machinery, and Supporting Industry in the green transition process.

The bright spot is that recently, the Government has provided many preferential policies for businesses in the industry to receive technology transfer and transform production towards sustainability. In particular, focusing on exploiting and effectively developing renewable energy sources, promoting the use of sustainable energy to replace energy sources that affect the environment, typically the installation of rooftop solar power in factories and industrial parks to help cope with the shortage of electricity for production during the hot season.

Furthermore, the domestic business community has more and more opportunities to access smart factory and industrial park models, experience and learn the application of modern technology in production such as Big Data, AI (artificial intelligence), IoT (Internet of Things), Edge Computing (edge computing)... from pioneering foreign enterprises.

To further expand the vision, a bridge It is very necessary for enterprises producing Electronics, Machinery and Supporting Industry products to introduce and promote their capacity, while strengthening cooperation and promoting long-term investment. Therefore, a specialized event of the industry is worth looking forward to and participating in.
