On September 12, private astronauts on SpaceX's improved Crew Dragon spacecraft walked into space, marking a major step forward for the commercial space industry.
SpaceX announced on social network X: "The first spacewalk from the Dragon spacecraft begins at 10:12 GMT" (ie 17:12 Hanoi time).
The Crew Dragon spacecraft, launched aboard a Falcon 9 rocket, launched four private astronauts into space early on September 10 to launch the five-day Polaris Dawn mission. The historic mission aims to test new spacesuit designs and conduct the first spacewalk by private astronauts.
The crew includes billionaire businessman Jared Isaacman, a retired fighter pilot and two SpaceX employees.
Previously, only highly trained government astronauts performed spacewalks. There have been about 270 spacewalks on the International Space Station (ISS) since it was established in 2000, and 16 spacewalks by Chinese astronauts on the Tiangong space station.
The Polaris Dawn spacewalk is scheduled for day 3 at an altitude of 700 km and will last 20 minutes.
