The meeting took place in a friendly, cordial and open atmosphere. Governor Gavin Newsom warmly welcomed and expressed his honor to welcome President Vo Van Thuong and the high-ranking Vietnamese delegation to visit the state of California.
The Governor emphasized that the state of California is committed to building long-term, sustainable relationships with Asia, including Vietnam. The Governor expressed pride in California being the state with the largest Vietnamese population in the United States and in having San Francisco as a sister city to Ho Chi Minh City.
President Vo Van Thuong expressed his pleasure at meeting the Governor, highly appreciating the Governor's sentiments and attention, and the generations of leaders and people of the state of California giving priority to promoting relations with Vietnam in accordance with the needs, potentials and advantages of both sides.
In particular, the San Francisco City Government and the Vietnamese Consulate General in San Francisco coordinated to organize the Vietnamese flag-raising ceremony to celebrate the 78th anniversary of Vietnam National Day (September 2, 1945 - September 2, 2023), showing the affection and respect of the leaders and people of California for Vietnam.
The President believes that, in the context of the two countries having just upgraded their relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership for peace, cooperation and sustainable development, and with advantages such as direct flights, a large Vietnamese community, and many investors from both countries, California will be a pioneer in developing bilateral relations.
The President asked the Governor to support the establishment of more sister cities, first of all Hanoi and Los Angeles.

Governor Gavin Newsom affirmed that the state of California values and is ready to further strengthen the friendship and effective, substantive cooperation with Vietnam, making more positive contributions to the overall development of relations between Vietnam and the United States as well as relations between the state of California and localities of Vietnam.
The two sides were pleased to note that the state of California has a good cooperative relationship with Vietnam, especially in terms of economy and trade, as demonstrated by the fact that many large corporations and enterprises of the state have invested in Vietnam and that Vietnam also has many investment projects in California. The Governor also affirmed that the establishment of a direct flight from Hanoi to San Francisco is a great opportunity for people-to-people exchange.
Chairman Vo Van Thuong hopes that the Governor will continue to prioritize the Vietnamese community in the state (the largest Vietnamese community in the United States with 700,000 people), creating conditions for them to do business, live, integrate well and make many contributions to the relationship between the two countries and with the locality.

The President said that he had just had a frank, open and friendly talk with the Governor of California; at the same time, he highly appreciated the potential and achievements in the development of Los Angeles - a famous technology center and seaport of the United States and the world.
The President welcomed the fact that many Los Angeles businesses have recently come to Vietnam to seek investment and cooperation opportunities; and was pleased to witness that during his working trip to the United States, businesses and localities of the two countries signed a cooperation agreement on developing the Seaport in Hai Phong city.
The President said that with the advantage of a long coastline, Vietnam has many localities with potential for seaport economic development; at the same time, he believed that cooperation activities between the Port of Los Angeles and Vietnamese businesses and localities will be successful, creating a premise for other cooperation activities between the two sides.
Los Angeles Deputy Mayor Erin Bromaghim expressed her joy and thanked President Vo Van Thuong for taking the time to meet her; she said that she will soon visit Vietnam with a delegation of US businesses to explore investment cooperation opportunities. Ms. Erin Bromaghim also expressed her joy that the state of California has established relations with the city of Hanoi.

Informing that in the past, she had welcomed many delegations of businesses and localities in Vietnam to Los Angeles to seek cooperation and investment opportunities, Ms. Erin Bromaghim expressed her wish to have the opportunity to welcome President Vo Van Thuong to visit Los Angeles to have the opportunity to introduce to the President the characteristics, potential and strengths of the city.
