Many people in Hoai Duc district (Hanoi) received phone calls from someone claiming to be an employee of the water supply company, demanding payment of months of debt and threatening that if they did not pay, their water would be cut off.
Mr. Pham Van Uoc (45 years old, in An Thuong commune, Hoai Duc district) said: "Recently, I have continuously received phone calls demanding water bills, the caller claimed to be an employee of Ha Dong Clean Water Company Limited.
I asked how many months my family owed. The person claiming to be my family replied that they owed 3 months and said that if they didn't pay, the water would be cut off. These people then called my wife and instructed her to pay via the app. Luckily, my wife saw signs of fraud and did not follow the instructions.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Huyen (43 years old, in An Thuong commune) recounted: "I saw a strange phone number but I still picked up the phone. Before I could ask anything, the caller asked me to pay the remaining 3 months of water bill, otherwise the water would be cut off.
I was suspicious because I had never owed any money. When I got home, I checked the bill and it was true. Not long after, they called again and threatened me, but I said I had paid in full. At that time, the person claiming to be them said to check again and did not call again.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Hao (35 years old, in An Thuong commune) also received a phone call with similar content.
Mr. Lai Van Thinh - Chairman of Ha Dong Clean Water Company Limited said: "I also received a phone call threatening to cut off the water. Realizing that they could not fool me, they hung up and did not call again."
No debt collection over the phone
Speaking with VietNamNet reporter, Mr. Hoang Van Thang - Deputy General Director of Ha Dong Clean Water Company Limited said that the company has notified customers about a scammer impersonating the company's employees and calling customers to request payment of water bills into the accounts provided by them.
"Recently, the company has received many complaints from customers about this. The company never has such a request for customers," Mr. Thang affirmed.
According to Mr. Thang, the process of reminding customers to pay their water bills is only carried out through the following forms: Sending messages on Zalo OA to customers who have registered as members or receiving direct notifications on the "NUOC SACH" app; staff will come to the house to send notices and debt reminders. There is no phone call to the people.
In addition, Mr. Thang also warned: "Customers need to be vigilant against the above scams to avoid losing money. For any necessary information, customers are requested to call the company's customer service department at: 02432525656 - 0832525656 for instructions and handling."
