MediaTek's new chip promises to take Android phones to the next level

According to Digitaltrends , MediaTek's latest weapon is the Dimensity 9300, a 4nm chip with a cluster of four top-of-the-line ARM cores that promises superior performance. Compared to its direct competitor, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, MediaTek's chip has an even more ambitious core configuration, with four ARM Cortex-X4 cores, with one core clocked at up to 3.25 GHz and the remaining three cores clocked at 2.85 GHz. For less demanding tasks, it is handled by a cluster of ARM Cortex-A710 cores.

Key specifications of Dimensity 9300

The Cortex-X4 core cluster comes into its own in synthetic benchmarks, allowing the Dimensity 9300 to deliver impressive results on Geekbench 6, AnTuTu, and gaming-focused GFXBench.

The Dimensity 9300 can support displays with a maximum refresh rate of 180Hz, with 4K panels capable of up to 120Hz. The chip integrates Wi-Fi 7 connectivity as well as a dedicated security chip for secure booting of the operating system.

In terms of AI-specific innovation, MediaTek's latest flagship mobile chip comes with an AI engine that doubles AI performance in certain metrics while consuming 45% less power. The APU 790 built into the chip also offers 8x faster performance than its predecessor.

MediaTek has also tweaked its memory architecture and claims the chip can run large language models with up to 13 billion parameters, scalable to 33 billion. For comparison, Qualcomm's latest and most powerful Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 can only run AI models with up to 10 billion parameters.

The Dimensity 9300 also supports mainstream multimodal large language models like Meta's Llama 2, Baidu LLM, and many others. However, the chip's focus is still on competing with Qualcomm in the battle for general AI tasks, including text, images, and audio.

Vivo X100 series is expected to be the first smartphone line equipped with Dimensity 9300 chip

On the graphics side, the Dimensity 9300 is powered by a new 12-core Immortalis-G720 GPU that promises to be 46% faster and 40% more power efficient. MediaTek is also working on gaming-centric perks like ray tracing technology that delivers 60fps gaming with console-grade lighting effects.

The image signal processor enables 4K HDR video recording at up to 60 fps and supports real-time bokeh effects in 4K video. The Dimensity 9300 focuses on native capabilities such as AI-powered object detection, dynamic video quality adjustment, and pixel-level autofocus.

MediaTek says the first phones powered by the Dimensity 9300 will appear later this year. This could include the upcoming Vivo X100 series.
