Rybar channel reported that in Avdiivka, the Russian armed forces, according to some data, made a slight advance towards Ocheretino and the dacha area near the processing facilities near the chemical and coke plant.

The difficult situation remains in the Stepovoe area, where positional battles are taking place, and near Severnoe, where Moscow forces had to retreat from positions hit by Kiev fire to preserve personnel.

Ukraine blocks enemy advance to Chasov Yar

At Bakhmut, Russia continued to expand its operational space, creating a favorable springboard for the upcoming major offensive to completely control Chasov Yar, they advanced north of Kleshchiivka.

Fierce fighting is taking place in Bogdanovka, as well as in Krasnoe, where Ukraine has deployed an active defense near Khromovo. At the same time, Russia is inflicting fire damage on enemy troops and equipment in the Antonovka, Bogdanovka and Kleshchiivka areas.

In the direction of Ugledar, fierce fighting for the village of Novomikhailovka continues. A Ukrainian stronghold, which covered the entrance to this settlement from the southeast, has been captured by the enemy. South of the highway from Elenovka is their firing point, preventing the Russians from deploying their reserves.

There were reports of advances in the forest belt south of Novomikhailovka, however, neither side was confident of controlling it. Some Ukrainian strongholds collapsed in the direction of Pobeda, however, in general, the pace of Russian advances in this area slowed down after the appearance of enemy reserves. There were no significant changes on the front line south of Ugledar .

In the Zaporizhia direction, battles are taking place at Rabotino and Verbovoe. According to some reports, Ukrainian formations counterattacked on the northern approaches to Novoprokopovka, trying to regain lost positions. Russian artillery fired at enemy concentrations at Rabotino.

In the Kherson direction, the situation has not changed significantly: gun battles are taking place on the islands, and in the village of Krynki, the sides are conducting positional combat operations, actively using attack drones.

An attempt by Moscow to gain a foothold in the center of the village was recorded, but an advancing armored vehicle was hit.

On the right bank of the Dnieper, Russia is methodically eliminating enemy manpower and equipment. Meanwhile, Ukraine continues to shell settlements on the left bank of the Kherson region.

Ukraine admits difficult situation in East and South

Ukrainska Pravda reported that the Ukrainian General Staff's report on Facebook on the evening of January 9 said that the operational situation in eastern and southern Ukraine remains difficult because the enemy is actively using UAVs and carrying out offensive operations with the support of armored vehicles.

According to reports, 64 clashes took place at the front in the past 24 hours. In total, the enemy launched 1 missile, conducted 29 air strikes, and carried out 17 attacks with multiple rocket launchers.

The Ukrainian General Staff confirmed that its forces repelled most of the enemy attacks in Kupyansk, Liman, Bakhmut, Marinka, Shakhtarsky and Zaporizhia.

According to the General Staff, Moscow did not abandon its intention to dislodge Kiev units from their bridgehead on the left bank of the Dnieper. During the day, the enemy carried out nine unsuccessful attacks, while Ukraine continued to hold its positions.

Ukraine is about to make a decision that "Russia will not like"

Defense Minister Rustem Umerov, together with Chief of the General Staff, General Valery Zaluzhny, visited Ukrainian positions in the Kupyansk region, Ukrainska Pravda reported.

Commander of the Ukrainian Army, General Alexander Syrsky, reported on the situation around Kupyansk, where Ukrainian soldiers are repelling repeated enemy attacks.

The Ukrainian Defense Ministry said that Russia has not achieved any success in this area.

"I was honored to meet with the commanders of the units fighting in this direction. They reported on the situation, the current challenges. Decisions will be made in the near future - the enemy will not like that," said Mr. Umerov.

Mr. Zelensky: We can provide the army with everything it needs

Ukrainska Pravda reported that in a video address on the evening of January 9, President Zelensky spoke about the issues being considered at the Supreme General Command on January 9, discussing the prospects for the supply of weapons and military equipment for 2024.

“Of course, we have looked at the number of deliveries expected this year. Despite all the problems in the world, our careful, clear approach helps to provide the Defense Forces with everything they need,” he said.

Mr Zelensky noted that world sanctions are effective and there is “clear evidence” of a slowdown in the Russian defense industry. But for the sanctions to be 100% effective, attempts to circumvent them must be completely stopped.

“Every week there are fewer opportunities for Russia. Every week there are more opportunities for Ukraine,” he asserted.

Ukrainian UAVs reportedly attack oil depot in Russia's Oryol region

Several UAVs attacked “fuel and energy complex facilities” in Russia’s Oryol region on the afternoon of January 9, regional governor Andrey Klychkov announced on Telegram, Kyiv Independent reported.

A third later crashed into a non-residential building near Oryol, Mr Klychkov added. No casualties were reported.

Governor Klychkov blamed the attack on Ukraine, while Kiev has not yet claimed responsibility. Ukrainian authorities rarely comment on attacks inside Russia.

White House discusses defense technology for Ukraine

The White House convened representatives from the venture capital, technology and defense sectors on January 8 to discuss a strategy for equipping Ukraine with modern weapons systems, Reuters reported.

National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan arranged the five-hour meeting, which included key members of the National Security Council as well as executives from companies such as Fortem Aerospace, Palantir Technologies and UAV maker Skydio.

Senior administration officials told reporters the meeting was aimed at advancing “helping Ukraine overcome the significant technological challenges they have identified as impeding their progress and momentum on the battlefield.”

Another senior official detailed specific areas of technology need that the leaders discussed.

“The discussion focused on a number of systems, including UAV systems, how to counter incoming UAVs and then also address the challenge of mine clearance,” the official said.

Ukrainian Air Force admits lack of air defense missiles

Ukraine is short of air defence missiles, air force spokesman Yury Ihnat said, the Guardian reported.

"Ukraine has consumed significant amounts of missile ammunition reserves for the three attacks that have taken place... There is clearly a shortage of guided anti-aircraft missiles."

The US Congress last month failed to approve $50 billion in security aid to Ukraine due to internal disputes.

Ukraine is also awaiting a 50 billion euro ($55 billion) aid package from the EU, but the future looks uncertain after being blocked by Hungary.

Ihnat said he hoped the delay in Western aid packages would be resolved soon because Ukraine depends on Western supplies for a range of defense needs.

“Today we have more and more Western equipment and therefore they need maintenance, repair, updating, replenishment and corresponding ammunition,” he said.

Ihnat's comments came after the New York Times reported on January 6 that White House and Pentagon officials warned that the supply of Patriot interceptor missiles could soon run into difficulties, with one missile said to cost between $2 million and $4 million each.

Bloomberg: Secret talks with Ukraine, G7, neutral countries fail

Representatives from Ukraine, Group of Seven (G7) countries and less obviously aligned nations such as India and Saudi Arabia held secret peace talks in Riyadh in December, Bloomberg reported on January 9, citing unnamed officials.

The talks did not produce meaningful results but represented efforts by Ukraine and its allies to urge countries outside the West to support Ukraine's peace formula.

While Ukraine's Western allies have largely remained steadfast in their support, countries in the global south have largely taken sides in the conflict and in some cases have strengthened ties with Russia.

The fourth meeting on Ukraine's peace formula is scheduled to be held ahead of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos from January 15-19.
