Russia launches massive missile attack, another prisoner exchange

Ukrainian authorities have cut off power amid a massive missile attack across the country on January 15.


Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on January 15 that Russia had launched a major airstrike on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, according to Reuters. Air defenses shot down at least 30 of the more than 100 missiles launched by Russia, Zelensky said. In addition, Russia used more than 70 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

The leader said he would call on Western partners to strengthen Ukraine's air defense system during a visit to Poland later in the day.

The Ukrainian Air Force said Russia had launched Kh-101, Kh-22, Kalibr and other cruise missiles. The alert was issued across Ukraine in the early hours of January 15 after a group of Russian Tu-95MS strategic bombers were spotted taking off from Olenya airport in Murmansk region. Russia also launched ballistic missiles from Belgorod region.

Ukrainian officials reported explosions in Kharkiv, Khmelbytsky, Ivano-Frankivsk. In the western city of Lviv, Mayor Andriy Sadovyi said Russian forces had attacked energy infrastructure. In the capital Kyiv, hundreds of residents ran to underground stations for shelter, according to Reuters.

The Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine reported that one person was killed and 16 were injured in the attacks during the day.

Ukraine's power grid operator Ukrenergo shut down power as a precaution during the attack. In Poland, to the west of Ukraine, military officials said they had deployed fighter jets to guard against incoming Russian missiles.

According to The Kyiv Independent , the Russian Defense Ministry has threatened to retaliate after Ukraine attacked military and industrial facilities on Russian territory on January 14 with long-range missiles supplied by the West.

The Russian Defense Ministry confirmed that it had carried out an attack on Ukrainian energy facilities on January 15 using precision weapons and UAVs, claiming that it had hit all targets. Moscow also said it had taken control of the village of Ukrainka in the Donetsk region in eastern Ukraine.

Russian soil continues to be attacked

Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov of Belgorod Oblast (Russia) announced on January 15 that Ukraine had launched 91 rockets and 36 UAVs to attack 9 districts in the province within 24 hours. The attacks injured 4 people and damaged many houses and vehicles.

On the same day, pro-Russian officials in the town of Novaya Kakhovka, Kherson province (southern Ukraine) said that three people were injured in a drone attack, according to TASS. The attack occurred at a car wash and many cars were damaged.

Kherson is one of four regions of Ukraine that Russia has announced it will annex in 2022, although it does not fully control them.

A new prisoner exchange has been carried out between Russia and Ukraine, mediated by the UAE. The Russian Defense Ministry announced that 25 servicemen had been sent home. In return, 25 Ukrainian servicemen were also returned. All Russian soldiers were taken to Belarus for medical examinations and to meet their relatives.

Ukrainian President Zelensky also confirmed the information and thanked the UAE for its support. This is the first prisoner exchange between the two countries in 2025.

Ukrainian soldiers were brought home in a prisoner exchange on January 15.

The two sides have conducted several prisoner exchanges, the most recent of which took place in late December 2024. At that time, Russia received 150 soldiers while Ukraine received nearly 200. The Russian soldiers were all transferred to Belarus before returning home.
