Vietnamese warships arrive in Malaysia, Indonesia for international parade

Light frigate 20 set sail for Malaysia and Indonesia to participate in international multilateral activities, including naval parades.

Ship 20 of Brigade 172, Naval Region 3, left Da Nang military port this morning, beginning its journey to participate in international multilateral activities at the invitation of the Malaysian and Indonesian navies.

During the 5,000 nautical mile journey, the crew will be trained to sail long distances, improve their ability to organize and coordinate command, combat readiness, and master weapons and equipment in conditions of long-term operations at sea, and organize patrols and reconnaissance to grasp the situation in the sea areas along the route.

In Malaysia, the 20th ship will participate in activities within the framework of the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (LIMA) such as naval ship display, parade and sea exercises. The Vietnamese warship will then go to Indonesia to participate in the 4th Multilateral Naval Exercise Komodo (MNEK-4), international ship parade, and the International Maritime Security Conference.

According to the Navy Newspaper , the trip aims to consolidate and enhance the friendly relations and cooperation between the Vietnamese army and navy with the armies of countries in and outside ASEAN, implement the guiding viewpoints of the Central Military Commission and the Ministry of National Defense on international integration and defense diplomacy, and continue to improve the ability to coordinate and cooperate in responding to common challenges in maritime security.

Ship 20 is the second Pohang-class light frigate transferred by South Korea to Vietnam, and began entering service with the Vietnam People's Navy in 2018.

The ship has a full load displacement of 1,300 tons, a maximum speed of 59 km/h, and a range of 7,000 km. The warship's weapons include two 76 mm Oto Melara automatic gun mounts, two 40 mm Otobreda twin-barrel gun mounts, two 324 mm torpedo launchers, and many 12.7 mm machine guns.
