According to initial information, at around 5:30 p.m. on May 15, a fire broke out in a temporary house next to the Phap Van - Tu Hiep dormitory (Hoang Liet, Hoang Mai, Hanoi).
Mr. Nguyen Manh Thang (a tenant in a temporary house) said that while he was in the house, he smelled a burning smell and saw a fire breaking out in the corner of his neighbor's house. After about 3 minutes, the fire flared up fiercely and spread quickly throughout the area.
“At that time, I shouted loudly for everyone to run away. Some people managed to carry the TV, others pulled the refrigerator outside,” said Mr. Thang.
Ms. Do Thi Nguyen (a tenant in a temporary house) is still in shock after the fire broke out. According to Ms. Nguyen, the fire started from a water pump next to her house.
"At that time, I saw the pump was full of smoke and then the fire broke out and quickly spread to the pile of air conditioners that my son was repairing," Ms. Nguyen recounted.
Another witness said that this temporary house was built with a steel frame and roofed with corrugated iron, and the whole area had about 18 households living there.
“The fire burned down seven houses and many of the belongings inside were damaged,” said a witness.
Upon receiving the news, the Fire Prevention and Rescue Police Team of Hoang Mai District Police dispatched 3 fire trucks and 2 water trucks along with dozens of officers and soldiers to the scene to put out the fire. Due to the strong wind at the time of the fire, and the location of the fire containing many flammable substances, the fire fighting work encountered many difficulties.
After 1 hour, the Fire Police force basically extinguished the fire and used excavators to pull down the burned houses to extinguish the ashes and cool them down.
According to initial statistics, the fire did not cause any human casualties, but about 7 temporary houses with an area of nearly 200 square meters were burned down.
Hoang Mai District Police are currently investigating the cause of the fire.
