Keys to double or triple the price of stocks; sure win, guaranteed loss… are all 'unbelievable' promises in stock investment. However, many investors still fall into the trap of fraud by this old trick.

Be careful with invitations to join online groups that "key" stocks.
While taking a nap during her lunch break, Nguyen Thuy (34 years old, Hanoi) was startled by a phone call from an unknown number. On the other end of the line, a person claimed to be an "employee of S Securities Company..." and offered to invest.
In the Zalo and Telegram groups with hundreds of members, Thuy saw a person named Q. who claimed to be an online stock market guru. Boasting of his high level of expertise, the online stock market "guru" promised investors that he would "tip" stocks to double in price, and committed to doubling or tripling their accounts.
But investing requires knowledge, so the "teacher" invited group members to register for advanced finance classes and group activities on Telegram. Immediately after that, a person claiming to be "teacher" Q's assistant continuously urged members to register.
The "teacher" even said that he is cooperating with a company, which has offered a special benefit to compensate for the recent gloomy stock market. Accordingly, each person will receive a random gift worth 200,000 - 500,000 VND in the form of phone bills.
Having read a lot of information about recent warnings about fraud and impersonation of securities company employees, Thuy asked those who called themselves "experts" to show their certificates and legal information about the business before registering for an investment course.
But just a few minutes later, Thuy was "kicked" out of the group, and the account she often contacted suddenly announced that it had "stopped working". Most people working in the securities industry affirmed that the market was volatile, and no one in the official securities companies dared to commit to covering losses or "double or triple" profits with investors.
Even many securities companies are "headaches" because of fraud. For example, SSI Securities also discovered a Zalo chat group impersonating the company and its leaders.
Accordingly, the subject created an account named Nguyen Duy Hung on the Zalo platform to provide comments and advice. From the Zalo platform, the subject continued to navigate to a closed group on the Telegram platform.
On their websites, many companies continuously remind customers to be wary of fake phone numbers claiming to be members of securities companies inviting them to join investment support groups.
Need to raise investor awareness
Lawyer Truong Thanh Duc, Vietnam International Arbitration Center, said that the current strong, cross-border social networking environment is favorable for increased fraud activities.
According to Mr. Duc, Vietnamese law has very strict and specific regulations for domestic activities, including both businesses and individuals. Requirements for practice certificates, advertising regulations, and content management are all strictly controlled.
However, when moving to a foreign-owned social media environment, Mr. Duc found that management became much more difficult. Advertising information related to investment on social media is often floating, unverified content, and anyone can post, promote or participate.
According to lawyer Nguyen Thanh Ha - Chairman of SBLAW Law Firm, these subjects understand the psychology of investors who want quick profits without investing knowledge and experience. From there, they commit fraud using sophisticated tricks, mainly on cyberspace, especially through the Telegram application.
"Through incidents like the Mr. Pips case, it is necessary to step up propaganda so that people understand that foreign exchange floors, virtual currencies, and gold status... are not allowed in Vietnam and should not participate," said Mr. Ha. In addition, it is also necessary to raise investor awareness.
Accordingly, investors who want to participate in finance can trade on exchanges such as HoSE, HNX, through funds, buy stocks or bonds, and should not participate in unauthorized investment channels as mentioned above.
