Goalkeeper McIntyre's outrageous actions. |
The incident happened in the first half when the score was 0-0. According to a video circulating on social media, McIntyre - who was a member of the youth teams of Everton and Man City when he was young - quickly asked for the ball to restart the match. However, after receiving the ball from the ball boy, he suddenly pushed him to the ground, causing great outrage among Cliftonville fans.
McIntyre was booed for the rest of the game, but the referee did not take any action. The 22-year-old goalkeeper played the full 90 minutes in Carrick Rangers' 3-0 away defeat.
After the match, the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) issued a statement: "We have received reports of an assault at the match in the Cliftonville Street area, north Belfast on 22 March." The Irish Football Association (IFA) said the incident had been referred to the Disciplinary Committee, through which the procedures would be carried out in accordance with regulations.

Carrick Rangers and McIntyre later apologised for "any hurt or distress that may have been caused". The club also donated to the Northern Ireland Children's Hospice and attempted to contact the ball boy and his family to apologise directly. McIntyre was also disciplined internally.
Both coaches of the two teams confirmed that they did not directly witness the incident. Coach Stephen Baxter (Carrick Rangers) admitted: "I only heard the noise from the audience but did not see any push, so I cannot comment."
Meanwhile, coach Jim Magilton (Cliftonville) commented: "If it was true that he touched the boy, he was lucky not to be sent off. Only McIntyre knows what really happened."
McIntyre grew up in the Man City training academy, played for Everton, Sunderland and some English clubs such as Accrington Stanley, Dartford before joining Carrick Rangers. With this incident, McIntyre's future could be seriously affected if he is convicted of violent behavior.
