Since the 1-1 draw with the Philippines in the third round of the 2024 ASEAN Cup group stage, the Vietnamese team has won all official and friendly matches. The team has accumulated 19.03 points, thereby rapidly rising in the rankings (expected to be 109), with a total of 10 places since October 2024, when it dropped to 119th place - the lowest level in the past 7 years.

In the April ranking, Vietnam increased its score the third most in the world, after Bosnia & Herzegovina (24.2 points) and Mexico (19.5 points). In terms of the number of places improved, Vietnam also ranked third with Norway and Paraguay (both increased by 5 places), behind Myanmar (7 places) and Guyana (6 places).

Vietnam significantly narrowed the gap with Thailand as the "War Elephants" just dropped two places to 99th. Meanwhile, Indonesia also made a big step forward, rising four places to 123rd thanks to a 1-0 win over Bahrain in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. The next rankings in Southeast Asia include the Philippines (146), Singapore (161), Myanmar (162), Cambodia (181), Brunei (185), Laos (190) and Timor Leste (197).

The FIFA rankings were introduced in December 1992. Each team's score depends on the importance of the match (coefficient), the result of the match, as well as the difference in ranking between the two teams. Friendly matches have a coefficient of 10, while the Asian Cup group stage has a coefficient of 35, and from the quarter-finals onwards it is 40.

The FIFA rankings are an important basis for seeding groups in the qualifying rounds and finals of major tournaments such as the World Cup or Asian Cup. Therefore, each point and each step forward on the rankings has strategic significance in the journey to reach the heights of Vietnamese football.
