Hospitalized for eating mushrooms

Recently, a 34-year-old male patient in Tan Ha commune (Duc Linh) had to be hospitalized after eating mushrooms. Specifically, the patient went to a garden in Duc Tai commune and saw horny mushrooms that looked like cordyceps, so he pulled up about 13-15 mushrooms to cook. After eating, the patient was still normal, but at 12:00 on May 22, 2023, he showed signs of vomiting a lot, abdominal cramps, then had impaired perception. His family took him to the Emergency Department - Southern Regional General Hospital for emergency treatment. The patient was then transferred to Cho Ray Hospital. The patient's health is currently impaired and he is being treated at Cho Ray Hospital.

A few years ago, the Emergency Department of this hospital admitted a couple who had eaten the above type of mushroom. The couple went to the field and saw a horned mushroom that looked like cordyceps, so they pulled out 21 mushrooms and cooked 11 mushrooms into porridge. They saved the remaining mushrooms for their grandchild the next day. However, a few hours after eating, both husband and wife showed signs of fatigue, blurred vision, and limp limbs. After being treated at the Southern Regional General Hospital, the patients were transferred to Cho Ray Hospital. After a period of treatment, both husband and wife recovered and were discharged from the hospital. That is information from the Emergency Department of the Southern Regional General Hospital.

Through the media, many cases of suspected poisoning due to eating horned cicada mushrooms have been recorded in some provinces and cities in the country, including deaths. Because this type of mushroom looks similar to Cordyceps, users are confused and eat it, leading to harmful effects on health and life.

Where is the cicada parasitic fungus?

It is known that the current time is starting to move into summer, with occasional heavy rains, which is also the time when cicadas become active. The toxic fungus gyrommitrin (cicada parasitic fungus) lives as a parasite on the body of adult cicadas, cicada carcasses or cicadas that cannot molt... develops, sprouts from the cicada carcasses, and cicada larvae emerge from the ground in places with loose soil and high humidity; it has a similar development cycle to cordyceps.

Gyrommintrin mushroom has the shape of a deer antler, red in color. The toxin in gyrommintrin mushroom is not destroyed when processed or cooked at boiling temperature. Therefore, many people mistake gyrommitrin mushroom for cordyceps, pluck it to cook to nourish the body, but get poisoned. This partly explains the reason for hospitalization, even death after eating cicada parasitic mushroom. Some people in Tanh Linh and Duc Linh said: During the rainy season, when people work in the fields, they occasionally see this type of mushroom.

Mr. Tran Minh Tuan - Chairman of the Association of Oriental Medicine of Binh Thuan Province: Currently, the market for selling Cordyceps sinensis is quite large. Users should buy from reputable units that have been granted product certification, and should not eat wild mushrooms or mushrooms of unknown origin to avoid unfortunate poisoning cases. Gyrommitrin mushroom is an extremely toxic mushroom that endangers the health and life of those who eat it.
