In the 2024-2025 winter-spring crop, the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center coordinated with Tuy Phong district to implement the model "Demonstration of the application of some new high-quality rice varieties" in Phu Lac commune. The model was implemented on a scale of 3.2 hectares/9 households in Lac Tri village, from November 2024 to February 2025. Thereby, helping people have more new rice varieties with outstanding characteristics to supplement the local rice variety structure.
Improve rice quality
In late February 2025, many rice farmers in Tuy Phong district were present at the fields in Phu Lac commune to witness the results of the new rice model. Looking at the golden rice fields, full of grains, and few pests in the model made the people happy because from now on they have more choices of high-quality rice varieties produced locally.
Tuy Phong has a rice cultivation area of over 2,100 hectares. For a long time, farmers have been cultivating rice using traditional methods, using some rice varieties that are susceptible to pests and diseases, with low yields, and sowing 25-35 kg/sao. Many households have not yet applied synchronous mechanization in production, so productivity and quality have not been as expected. Therefore, applying mechanization in agricultural production not only frees up labor but also increases productivity on the same cultivated area.
Along with some rice growing localities in the province, in the winter-spring crop of 2024 - 2025, Binh Thuan Agricultural Extension Center coordinated with local authorities to implement the model with 4 varieties including Hung Long 555; NPV79; VN 121 and Dai Thom 8. Farmers fertilized before sowing with organic fertilizer and phosphate fertilizer. At the same time, sowing by sprayer, the amount of seed sown was 12 kg/sao, reducing 50 - 60% of the amount of seed sown compared to normal production.
People are trained in advanced technical measures in rice production, applying 1 must 6 reductions: must use certified seeds, reduce seed quantity, reduce fertilizer, reduce pesticides, reduce irrigation water, reduce post-harvest losses and reduce carbon emissions. Increase the use of organic fertilizers and biological pesticides. Record electronic field diaries instead of traditional paper diaries.
After about 4 months of implementing the model, the results showed that the NVP 79 rice variety in the model had a higher plant height than Hung Long 555. In the Dai Thom 8 rice variety model, Hung Long 555 had good tillering and flowering. The theoretical yield of the varieties was from 72.8 quintals to 77.2 quintals/ha compared to the control outside the model. The theoretical yield in the model was 6.6 quintals/ha to 16 quintals/ha higher.
Reduce production costs
In addition, the cost of fertilizer in the model is higher than outside the model due to organic fertilizer. The amount of organic fertilizer is 1,000 kg/ha, phosphate fertilizer is 22 kg/ha, so households participating in the model boldly reduce the amount of chemical fertilizer by 10 - 15% compared to the previous crop. On the other hand, adding organic fertilizer will increase soil fertility, increase minerals and effective microorganisms for the soil, the effect of soil improvement is very good, especially for degraded soils, improving the ability of rice plants to resist pests and diseases better. On the other hand, the number of times households participate in the model spray pesticides is 3 - 4 times/crop, while outside the model is 5 - 6 times/crop. Farmers spray to prevent pests and diseases because in the model the rate of pests and diseases is lower, farmers spray to prevent diseases at some important stages such as before and after flowering... to avoid affecting productivity.
According to the assessment of farmers, the profit in the model is 25 - 30% higher than outside the model. Above all, the model has helped people in Phu Lac commune produce 1 must 6 alternating wet and dry, manage fields, protect the environment, gradually form concentrated production areas, contribute to increasing income, stabilize life. Specifically, saving 50 - 60% of seeds, adding 3 new varieties to the structure for people to choose from. The model's yield increased by more than 10 - 11 quintals/ha compared to mass production. In particular, the total cost for 1 hectare of rice in the model field is lower than that of the field outside the model by more than 1.6 million VND (accounting for 6%), while the profit of the model field increased by 25 - 30% (13 - 16 million VND/ha) compared to the field outside the model.
The provincial Agricultural Extension Center added that the model results showed that the three rice varieties Hung Long 555, NVP 79 and Dai Thom 8 have potential due to their superior characteristics and suitability to local soil and climate. Therefore, the provincial Agricultural Extension Center proposed that Tuy Phong district have a plan to maintain and continue to expand the scale of sparsely sown rice production, apply organic fertilizers and reduce the amount of chemical fertilizers.
