The Cham people's Ramuwan Festival usually begins with the most important ritual, which is the tomb-sweeping ceremony, to pay homage to their ancestors. During these days, especially during the tomb-sweeping ceremony, thousands of people wearing traditional costumes with neatly arranged trays of food in hand, line up to go deep into the cave to visit the tombs and pay homage to their ancestors. Everyone's face shows joy because after a year, the clan can meet again. Stories about the seasons and the changing lives of each family are vividly connected on the familiar village road.
In the Cham cemetery, people are buried in groups according to their clan. More specifically, and also a unique cultural feature, Cham graves are not built solidly but are covered with sand at ground level and marked with a round stone. These stones are arranged in long, regular rows. Here, after the celebrant in the clan performs the ritual of sweeping the sand and sprinkling water to purify the graves, each clan will arrange offerings and wear traditional costumes, sit in two long rows to read prayers and worship their ancestors...
Tomb-sweeping ceremony and accompanying rituals are traditional customs that have been passed down from many generations. It is a way to commemorate and show gratitude to ancestors and clans as well as the spirituality of everyone in the community before celebrating Tet. Offerings in the tomb-sweeping ceremony are quite simple, including betel and areca nuts, tobacco, drinks and candies... In the past, the tomb-sweeping ceremony in particular and Ramưwan were occasions for Cham people far from home to return to worship their ancestors and reunite with their families and relatives. However, with these unique cultural features, the Cham people's tomb-sweeping ceremony has attracted many tourists and cultural researchers to come and study.
With the meaning of helping descendants remember their ancestors, grandparents, and parents and pray for peace in the village, prosperity in every family, and good crops, the Cham people's Ramưwan Festival includes many traditional rituals following each other. After the tomb-sweeping ceremony, families and clans will return home to worship their ancestors, celebrate the New Year, and then dignitaries and monks will go to the temple to perform the fasting month.
