Hoping that his wife would soon get well and no longer have to undergo dialysis three times a week due to kidney failure, Mr. T. (47 years old, living in Phu Nhuan district, Ho Chi Minh City) decided to donate a kidney to save his wife, Ms. NBTG (46 years old).

Ms. G. has chronic kidney failure and has had to undergo dialysis 3 times a week since 2020. Recently, Ms. G.'s health has been getting worse, with many complications such as fatigue, swelling of the hands and feet... Seeing his wife struggling with the disease every day, feeling sorry for her hands having to undergo surgery many times to create blood vessels for dialysis, Mr. T. decided to donate a kidney to his wife with the wish to share some of the pain of the disease with his wife.

After careful preparation, in early January 2025, Ms. G. and her husband went into surgery. The surgery was performed by doctors at Xuyen A General Hospital (HCMC) with professional support from doctors at Cho Ray Hospital.

The surgical team removed Mr. T's left kidney through endoscopy and transplanted it into Ms. G's body. After 6 hours, the kidney transplant surgery was a success. Both husband and wife's health recovered well after the surgery.

The paraclinical results after kidney transplantation showed that the recipient's kidney function gradually stabilized and returned to normal, and the amount of urine to date is at a normal level. This is a good sign, marking the great success of the surgery.

Kidney transplant surgery team for patient

On February 8, Master - Specialist Doctor 1 Vu Le Anh, Head of the Department of Nephrology, Xuyen A General Hospital, said that patient G. has been on dialysis for nearly 5 years with very bad blood vessels. Both of the patient's arms have been operated on to create blood vessels because the patient has a tendency to clot. The patient even had artificial blood vessels placed but they were still damaged later. The patient has difficulty with dialysis. That is the reason the patient decided to have a kidney transplant.

The patient received a kidney from a non-blood relative, so the risk of immunity and rejection is high. After the kidney transplant, the patient was treated with an anti-rejection regimen and was found to have blood clots. The patient had swelling in the legs due to partial occlusion of the external iliac vein and femoral vein. At that time, the patient was given anti-rejection drugs and plasma exchange, anticoagulants. After 3 weeks, the patient gradually recovered kidney function, the patient is currently healthy, has normal activities and was discharged from the hospital. After discharge, the patient was treated with anti-rejection drugs and had regular follow-up visits.

This is the hospital's 11th kidney transplant, with professional support from doctors at Cho Ray Hospital. All kidney transplants have worked well, and the health of both the donor and recipient is stable.
