Ms Maly confirmed the information after a newspaper reported that the Chinese government was preparing to donate two warships to Cambodia at the Ream naval base in Sihanoukville.
Ms. Maly said that the ships that China is providing to Cambodia are not the ones currently docking at Ream Port, but will be newly built according to Cambodia’s proposal. She said the new ships are expected to be completed and handed over to Cambodia by 2025 or later.
Cambodia also receives a lot of support from other partners such as training and equipment provision, Ms. Maly added, and welcomes all parties who truly want to help Phnom Penh.
Ms. Maly affirmed that Cambodia is a sovereign country, with full rights to build and strengthen cooperation with all partners for the benefit of the nation and its people, in accordance with the purposes and principles of the Cambodian Constitution.
The official also stressed: "Cambodia does not allow cooperation with any partner, whether small or large, that goes against its constitution, especially harming the country's sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence."
