According to AFP news agency, on February 21, US President Donald Trump signed a memorandum calling for restricting Chinese investments in strategic areas such as technology and critical infrastructure.

The White House said the move was aimed at promoting foreign investment while protecting US national security interests, "particularly in the face of threats from foreign adversaries" such as China.

The memo targets China, accusing it of “increasingly exploiting US capital to develop and modernize its military, intelligence, and other security apparatuses,” according to the White House.

The memo calls for using the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) to restrict Chinese investments in key Washington sectors such as technology, critical infrastructure, health care and energy.

CFIUS is tasked with assessing the impact of foreign investments on US national security.

"President Trump is keeping his promise to prevent foreign adversaries from taking advantage of the United States," the White House stressed.

The memo comes after Mr Trump imposed an additional 10% tariff on all products imported from China earlier this month.

The US has accused China of involvement in the fentanyl trade, but Beijing has denied the accusation.

However, on February 19, President Trump suggested that it was "possible" to reach a trade deal with China.
