Does drinking coffee cause tooth decay? Answer from Dong Nam Dental expert

According to Dr. Nguyen Phu Nhan: “Coffee is not a direct cause of tooth decay, but it contributes to increasing this risk. Because coffee is acidic and contains tannins, it easily adheres to teeth, causing yellowing and enamel erosion over time. This creates conditions for plaque and bacteria to grow and form cavities. In addition, coffee can reduce saliva secretion, causing dry mouth, making it easy for bacteria to attack, causing bad breath, tooth decay, etc.”

Explaining the formation of tooth decay, Dr. Nhan also added: “Tooth decay originates from harmful bacteria residing in dental plaque, they use sugar from food to create acid. This acid erodes tooth enamel, destroys dentin, leading to the formation of brown and black cavities.”

Factors that increase the risk of tooth decay when drinking coffee

Coffee affects tooth decay in different ways, depending on specific factors:

● Drinking too much coffee, sipping coffee for hours on end.

● Add more sugar, condensed milk or cream to your coffee.

● Drinking coffee continuously for a long time but not paying attention to proper oral hygiene.

● Individual factors such as genetics, weak tooth enamel, or other health problems may make some people more susceptible to tooth decay from coffee.

How to drink coffee safely for teeth

Although coffee can cause tooth decay and other dental problems, it does not mean that you have to give up your favorite drink. Instead, to limit the effects of coffee on your dental health, you should apply the following scientific drinking methods:

● Drink coffee through a straw.

● Drink water or rinse your mouth with water after drinking coffee.

● Drink black coffee with or without sugar.

● Remember to brush your teeth properly 2-3 times/day with fluoride toothpaste. Use dental floss and mouthwash to increase the ability to clean plaque and bacteria.

● Maintain the habit of dental check-ups and scaling every 6 months to keep teeth clean and healthy, and screen for diseases well.

The risks caused by coffee to the teeth will be effectively prevented when you drink it scientifically, combined with thorough oral hygiene. Regular check-ups at a reputable dentist are also an important note to protect oral health.

When should a decayed tooth be extracted?

With many years of professional experience, Dr. Nhan said: “Preserving real teeth is always the top priority by filling or root canal treatment and restoring them with porcelain crowns. Only extracting decayed teeth in unavoidable cases such as: large broken decayed teeth close to the tooth root, large holes, severely infected decayed teeth causing tooth abscesses, loose tooth roots,... cannot be effectively treated by any method”.

In fact, tooth extraction is not as painful or risky as many people worry.

Currently, at long-standing reputable dental centers such as Dong Nam Dental, the standard medical tooth extraction process will be applied, directly performed by highly skilled doctors to ensure safety, gentleness and speed.

● Step 1: Examination and consultation, X-ray to determine the specific condition of the tooth to have the optimal treatment plan, then inform the patient of the reasonable cost of tooth extraction . After the patient agrees, the doctor will decide to extract the tooth on the same day or schedule a convenient date.

● Step 2: Oral hygiene and sterilization of the area where the tooth needs to be extracted are mandatory in every tooth extraction to prevent infection.

● Step 3: The doctor injects anesthetic into the area of the tooth that needs to be extracted to help the patient feel comfortable and not feel pain during the tooth extraction process.

● Step 4: The doctor proceeds to extract the tooth using specialized tools. The tooth extraction process is performed using ultrasound waves, so it is very quick, safe and causes little bleeding.

● Step 5: Stitch the wound (if necessary), let the patient bite on a cotton swab to stop the bleeding. At the same time, the doctor will prescribe pain medication, instruct on proper care for the wound to heal quickly and schedule a follow-up appointment.

In case of tooth decay, yellowing or other unusual problems, please contact a reputable dental clinic for advice and examination.
