During an online meeting with Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, Chinese Defense Minister Dong Jun said that as two major powers, Russia and China should strengthen cooperation and respond strongly to global challenges.
“As the two most important and key forces in the world, Russia and China should respond decisively to global challenges,” Defense Minister Dong Jun said.

“We support Russia on the Ukraine issue despite the fact that the United States and the European Union (EU) continue to put pressure on China,” Chinese Defense Minister Dong Jun said, adding that Beijing “will not change its position on this issue.”
Defense Minister Dong Jun said that “the US has always targeted Russia and China, seeking to maintain global hegemony,” but stressed that “history and reality prove that hegemony will inevitably fail.”
For his part, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said that unlike Western countries, Russia and China do not “create military blocs” and that their military cooperation is not “aimed against third countries.”
The Russian defense minister noted that “Russian-Chinese relations in the military sphere are developing steadily in all areas” and said he looked forward to “close, effective cooperation” with his Chinese counterpart.
This is the first exchange with a foreign counterpart of Chinese Defense Minister Dong Jun in his new position. Mr. Dong Jun was just appointed as Minister of National Defense by the Standing Committee of the 14th National People's Congress (NPC) of China in late December 2023, replacing his predecessor Li Shangfu who was dismissed in October of the same year.
