Proud of the heroic Army's tradition of determination to fight and win At the ceremony, Lieutenant General Nguyen Van Phiet (87 years old, Hero of the People's Armed Forces, former Party Secretary, Deputy Commander of Politics, Air Defense - Air Force) was honored to speak at the ceremony on behalf of millions of
veterans nationwide. Lieutenant General Nguyen Van Phiet remembers the fierce years of war against the invading American imperialists. During the 12-day and night campaign, from December 18 to 29, 1972, our army and people defeated the strategic air raid by B52 aircraft of the American imperialists on the North of our country.

During this campaign, the Air Defense - Air Force, together with the people and soldiers of the North, shot down 81 planes; of which, there were 34 B52 planes, 16 of which crashed on the spot. His heroic 57th Battalion, 261st Air Defense Missile Regiment participated in 19 battles, shooting down 4 B52 planes. Notably, on the night of December 20 to the morning of December 21, when the number of missiles was still low and there were many enemy planes, he commanded the decision to fire each missile, focusing on destroying the B52 planes. After the two flying fortresses nicknamed "thunder god, ghost" were shot down, the enemy's combat formation retreated in panic. The achievements of the 57th Air Defense Battalion contributed significantly, together with the army and people of the whole country, to the historic victory of "Hanoi - Dien Bien Phu in the air".

Lieutenant General Nguyen Van Phiet, on behalf of cadres and soldiers of all periods, expressed his respect and deep gratitude to President Ho Chi Minh, the Party, the State, and the heroic Vietnam People's Army for guiding, giving wings, and nurturing generations of fighters and adults. Lieutenant General Nguyen Van Phiet expressed that the veterans returning from the war were deeply moved and always remembered their comrades and teammates who heroically sacrificed their entire lives for the cause of national liberation and reunification. The blood of the heroic martyrs has colored the revolutionary flag, made the motherland Vietnam blossom with independence, bear fruit of freedom, and made the beautiful life of today.
