As a long-time examiner, I advise candidates to develop an outline for writing a short paragraph as follows:
- Direct introduction, if the topic is an opinion then you must quote that opinion.
- The paragraph development section needs to directly answer the main point of the question (this is the idea finding operation), and can be briefly explained if necessary.
- There should be about 1 or 2 examples and additional criticism/refutation to convince the grader at the end of the development section.
- The conclusion includes summarizing the problem and stating lessons for society and yourself (1, 2 sentences).
How to find ideas according to topics that often appear in exams
After reading the question, candidates should write down on scratch paper the key points to answer.
For example, with the requirement of the 2023 literature illustration test: "From the content of the reading comprehension excerpt, write a paragraph (about 200 words) presenting your thoughts on the power of the spirit of overcoming difficulties in life", candidates need to find the following 4 key ideas:
- People with the spirit of overcoming difficulties will not give up when facing difficulties;
- Always find ways to solve problems, turn danger into opportunity, turn difficulty into motivation;
- People with the spirit of overcoming difficulties will easily achieve many successes in life;
- Will be a shining example to inspire those around.
Grade 12 students are studying hard to prepare for the 2023 high school graduation exam taking place at the end of June.
After finding ideas, candidates rely on the suggested outline above and linking words to write a complete paragraph.
Below are ways to find ideas for some topics that often appear in high school graduation exams:
Topic 1: The need to respect the cultural values of the nation (illustrative topic 2022). Key ideas to include when writing:
- Protecting cultural values is protecting the spiritual foundation and identity of the nation;
- National cultural values create solidarity, connect generations, and create national strength;
- It is a manifestation of patriotism, strengthening the spirit of patriotism.
Topic 2: Discuss the role/meaning/effect/power of "human will in life" (2019 exam). Key ideas:
- Will urges people to overcome all adversities;
- Will nourishes desire;
- Willpower helps people strive to act to succeed and contribute positively to the community.
Topic 3: The need to cherish life every day (2020 exam). Key ideas:
- Help people know how to experience to enjoy life;
- Take advantage of time and opportunities to develop yourself;
- From there, create values for yourself, prepare for the future, and contribute to the community.
Topic 4: The need to live a life of dedication (2021 exam). Ideas to find:
- Living a life of dedication demonstrates personal responsibility to the community;
- Make your life meaningful, loved, and respected;
- Contribute to spreading good values, promoting social development.
Topic 5: How to practice critical thinking? Key points to clarify:
- To have good critical thinking, we need to learn how to observe and evaluate problems objectively;
- Always ask questions when faced with a problem;
- Don't follow the crowd, but have your own views and opinions;
- Have confidence in yourself to boldly debate;
- But you also have to know how to listen and accept other people's arguments, if they are right.
This year's high school graduation exam has over 1 million candidates registered to take the exam, about 250,000 people participating in organizing the exam in the regions.
Topic 6: The value of people who know how to face and conquer adversity. Important ideas:
- Knowing how to face and conquer adversity helps people understand their own strengths and weaknesses, thereby improving themselves, rising up in life, and contributing to society;
- Help people have the conditions to mature quickly, because it trains a proactive attitude, courage, and will to overcome difficulties and challenges;
- The highest is to assert yourself, to assert your "ego" before life;
- From there, increase self-worth, gain trust and respect from everyone.
Topic 7: The need to take responsibility for one's own actions. Key points:
- It is a manifestation of self-esteem;
- Make people more mature;
- Helps to avoid a lifestyle of dependence on others;
- It is essential to improve good relationships between people in society.
