TikTok said yesterday (February 7) it will allow Android users in the United States to download and connect to the short video app through a toolkit on the website, in a bid to circumvent restrictions on the popular platform in the United States.
Apple and Google have not put TikTok back on their app stores since a US law took effect on January 19, requiring Chinese owner ByteDance to sell the app on national security grounds or face a ban.
TikTok allows Android users in the US to download the app via the website.
President Donald Trump, who took office the day after the law took effect, signed an executive order delaying implementation of the law for 75 days.
Mr Trump said he had been in talks with several people about buying TikTok and would likely make a decision on the app’s future this month. TikTok currently has about 170 million users in the United States.

Free speech advocates opposed the TikTok ban under the law, which passed Congress overwhelmingly and was signed by then-President Joe Biden.
ByteDance said U.S. officials misrepresented its relationship with China, arguing that its content recommendation engine and user data are stored in the United States on cloud servers owned by Oracle, while content moderation decisions affecting U.S. users are also made in the United States.
