Speaking at the third Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Fair (September 18-20), Minister Vicente de la O said that to achieve the above clean energy usage target, technological challenges and changes in consumption habits must be overcome, requiring the participation of the whole society.
Referring to the Policy on developing the potential of renewable energy sources and using energy efficiently, he said that this has become the roadmap for Cuba's energy transition and towards a sovereign and sustainable energy future.
According to the Cuban Minister of Energy and Mines, the strategy outlined is comprehensive in nature with objectives and actions aimed at ensuring a safe and balanced transition to environmentally friendly technologies, reducing polluting emissions and fully in line with the international commitments signed by the Caribbean island.
Despite many difficulties and challenges, Cuba currently has 300 megawatts of photovoltaic power, allowing 300,000 families to have electricity to cook at noon, 11.4 megawatts of clean energy wind power, 3 megawatts of hydropower, and 62 MW of biomass power from sugarcane bagasse, contributing to reducing the consumption of thousands of tons of oil.
The Caribbean island nation is installing more than 2,000 megawatts of solar power, building two wind farms and 13 small hydropower plants.
