Artist Tran Thi Thu Dong, Vice President of the Vietnam Union of Literature and Arts Associations, President of the Vietnam Association of Photographic Artists, delivered a speech at the Conference of General Secretary To Lam meeting with artists and literary delegates.

Dear General Secretary To Lam,

Dear leaders of the Party, State, Vietnam Fatherland Front, Central Committees, Ministries and Branches,

Dear all delegates!

First of all, please allow me, on behalf of more than a thousand members of the Vietnam Association of Photographic Artists and tens of thousands of people working in photography nationwide, to express my deep emotion and gratitude for the attention of the General Secretary and the Party and State leaders, who, despite being busy with thousands of national affairs and with a tight work schedule, still give special attention to culture, literature, art and the team of artists. The fact that we were invited to attend today's meeting also speaks to that.

We, the artists, always follow the activities of the General Secretary and always respect and are proud of our leader. Not only that, the General Secretary is also a person who has a deep understanding of culture, literature and art, and highly values artists. The construction of the Ho Guom Theater - one of the 10 most modern theaters in the world today while the General Secretary is the Minister of Public Security is one of the proofs of that.

Dear General Secretary and delegates,

Officials and people in general, and us artists in particular, have seen that since the 10th Central Conference was held last September, in just a few months, the whole country has been infused with new sources of vitality and motivation, urging the desire to develop and rise in every Vietnamese person when being exposed to the strong and breakthrough policies and decisions of the General Secretary and the Party and State leaders. The entire political system, even most of the people, have agreed and unanimously determined that the 14th Congress will be the event marking the moment when our country enters a new era - the era of national rise; and I see that everyone is excited and hopeful for a very bright future for the country.

In the speeches, articles and statements of the General Secretary and the leaders, we deeply realize that in the New Era, the General Secretary wants Vietnam to not only develop strongly in terms of economy, science and technology, national defense and security potential, but also develop strongly in terms of culture. Because culture is the soul of the nation, the foundation and endogenous strength to build and develop the country. Culture is patriotism, the aspiration of the nation, the willingness of each person to sacrifice for everyone, for the development of the country. In that sense, culture is the soft power to be able to "move mountains, fill seas; turn the impossible into the possible". Practice has proven that developed countries close to us such as Korea and Japan have succeeded precisely because they focus on culture.

As artists, we are truly proud and happy to live, work and contribute under the leadership of the Communist Party of Vietnam. Because history has proven that, in any circumstances, our Party and State always attach importance to the role of culture, literature and art and the team of artists, and always pay attention to building culture. That is why culture in general and literature and art in particular have contributed to creating national strength, the desire for peace and the spirit of fighting for justice so that our army and people can win against the most powerful armies in the world in the struggle for national independence.

Conference Overview

In peacetime, in the recent period of economic development, industrialization, modernization, innovation and integration, culture, literature and art have "stood shoulder to shoulder" with other forces, under the leadership of the Party, to achieve great achievements in 40 years of innovation. Especially, when entering the new era of development - the era of national development, culture, literature and art and the team of artists cannot stand aside, but must "stand shoulder to shoulder" even more, maximize their advantages and roles, as "soft power" to pioneer and take the lead in the ideological and cultural front; do a good job of conveying the Party's guidelines and policies, turning the political determination of the Party and State into the political determination of the entire people, the entire army, the entire society; arouse patriotism, love for the homeland, knowing how to sacrifice, knowing how to contribute to the Fatherland, to the People; know how to be dynamic, innovative, creative, passionate about dedication; make all Vietnamese people have the aspiration to bring Vietnam to "rise up" and stand shoulder to shoulder with the world's great powers.

Dear General Secretary and delegates,

When talking about the role of culture, literature and art, it is impossible not to mention the contribution of artists. Literary and artistic works from many different fields (including Photography) are the result of creativity and intellectual labor of many generations of talented artists; these works have helped shape the awareness, thoughts, feelings and aesthetics of the people, contributing to building the spiritual foundation of society and the comprehensive development of the Vietnamese people.

Photography is a creative art, combining the element of light with the unique and delicate perspective of the photographer, not only truthfully reflecting the lives of cadres, soldiers and people in production, combat and study, but each photo also contains a valuable message of "Truth - Goodness - Beauty" contributing to making people's souls more beautiful, rich in compassion and altruism; educating people to love their homeland and country, have the ambition to contribute, be ready to sacrifice for the fight against foreign invaders, gain national independence, as well as to contribute to the cause of building and defending the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. And more specifically, photographic works are also the living voice of a Vietnamese people who are confidently reaching out to the world. Each photo of misty mountain ranges, beautiful rice fields, bustling cities, majestic constructions or coal dust-blackened faces of miners, sweat rolling down the faces of workers on construction sites, sweaty soldiers on the training ground or dark circles due to lack of sleep but full of determination of workers working overtime to meet construction progress, or the honest, simple, gentle smiles of the Vietnamese people, etc. are all stories about a nation rich in cultural identity, tradition, resilience, bravery, indomitability and full of aspirations for development. Through the lens of photography, the image of the Vietnamese people in the New Era is not just a simple image, but will be a soft power that spreads and touches the emotions of every member of society as well as international friends. The power of these frames will help affirm Vietnam's position in the international arena, as a "messenger" or a sincere but also proud invitation from the land and people of Vietnam to friends around the world, so that they will love and appreciate more a Vietnam rich in compassion, tolerance, "self-reliance, self-confidence, self-reliance, self-strengthening, and national pride".

In addition, photography also carries the mission of inspiring national pride, responsibility and aspiration for development for the young generation. When young eyes look up at photographic works, they not only see beautiful images of their homeland and country, but also see the aspiration and miraculous rise of a nation that has suffered much pain and loss due to foreign invasion, a nation that both knows how to appreciate the sacred values of previous generations and opens its arms to receive the civilized and advanced values of humanity. And then, photography is not only an art form but also a bridge between the past and the present, connecting the souls and hearts of members of society with each other and between Vietnam and friends around the world. And most importantly, photography is the thread that connects generations of Vietnamese people, the Vietnamese community at home and abroad, so that together they can stand firm, confident and full of aspiration to enter the new era.

Leaders of the Vietnam Association of Photographic Artists and photographers at the Conference. The Vietnam Association of Photographic Artists was honored to have 15 artists invited to attend the Conference.

Dear General Secretary and delegates,

In order to further motivate artists to feel secure and have the conditions to contribute more to the development of the country, the attention, encouragement and regular support of the Party and State leaders for the artists is extremely important, and today's meeting is a proof. On this occasion, I would like to propose to the General Secretary and the leaders, ministries and branches in the coming time to have more substantive policies and guidelines to clearly demonstrate the Party and State's attention to literature and art, remove bottlenecks in regulations and inappropriate procedures in rewarding and supporting the creation of literature and art; create more favorable conditions and means of operation, to help artists have the conditions to create, compose and develop their talents to create literary and artistic works that are both imbued with Vietnamese identity and in line with the modern breath. Because literature and art are not just about creating works to read, listen to, and watch for entertainment, but also about guiding thoughts, nurturing souls and emotions, and building revolutionary ethics and national ethics for all people. It is indispensable for the journey into the era of the Vietnamese nation's rise that the General Secretary and the draft documents of the 14th Congress have proposed.

Currently, the Vietnam Association of Photographic Artists has a huge source of photographic materials. More than 10 years ago, with the attention of the Party and the State, the Association invested in building the Vietnam Art Photography Archive and Exhibition Center in Hanoi. However, since then, the Center has only been able to perform the function of collecting and archiving. In the context of the whole country building a digital nation, digital economy, digital society and promoting the development of the cultural industry, the Vietnam Association of Photographic Artists earnestly recommends that the Party and the State pay attention and create financial conditions to turn this place into a Creative Space and Digital Transformation of modern Vietnamese Photography , on par with the Photography Museums of countries around the world. From there, Vietnamese Photography will have the opportunity to promote the image of the country and Vietnamese people more.

Before concluding, I would like to wish the General Secretary, Party and State leaders, distinguished delegates and their families good health and happiness, to lead the country and people of Vietnam firmly, confidently and make many breakthroughs in the new era, achieving development goals on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Party's founding and the 100th anniversary of the country's founding.

Thank you very much!
