I am pregnant with my first child and like to eat fruits including pineapple to improve my health.

However, many people say that pregnant women should not eat pineapple because it can cause miscarriage. Please advise, doctor. (Thao Phuong, Binh Duong)

Pineapple is a popular tropical fruit, with a slightly sour taste and a sweet aftertaste. Pineapple is easy to prepare and versatile in its uses, from desserts and main dishes to juices and cocktails.

The nutritional composition of pineapple is quite diverse. On average, 100g of pineapple contains 86g of water, 11.4g of sugar, 1.4g of fiber, 0.5g of protein, 0.1g of fat and provides the body with 60 calories.

Pineapple contains a large amount of vitamin C, B1, B2, B3, B4 (choline), B9 (folate) and minerals such as copper, magnesium, potassium, calcium and phosphorus. In particular, this fruit also contains bromelain - an enzyme that helps break down protein effectively, aids digestion, and prevents bloating and indigestion during pregnancy.

Regarding your question, pregnant women can eat pineapple but need to eat it properly, peel off the core, should not eat more than 220g of pineapple a day and should not eat pineapple continuously for many days. Pregnant women also need to limit eating pineapple in the first 3 months of pregnancy.

The reason is that consuming more than 25g of sugar a day (ie more than 220g of pineapple) can easily increase the risk of overweight, obesity, diabetes, and high blood pressure in pregnant women. Continuous consumption of pineapple can also cause uterine involution in pregnant women, thereby increasing the risk of premature birth and miscarriage, especially in the first 3 months of pregnancy. The main substance responsible for causing uterine involution in the mother is bromelain - an enzyme found in abundance in the core of pineapple. Therefore, when eating pineapple, mothers should peel off the core to ensure health safety.

Entering the second and third trimesters, mothers can eat pineapple in moderation (less than 220g per day), eat it properly (remove the core) and should only eat 1-2 times per week.

Eating pineapple properly can help bring many health benefits to the pregnant mother's body, such as anti-inflammatory, anti-thrombotic, immune-boosting, anti-inflammatory, wound healing and improving the digestive system. However, each pregnant woman also has her own health condition, disease and fetus, so the mother should go for a nutrition check-up, test the micronutrients in the body to have the most scientific diet.
