On June 5-6, the Indian Federal Railways announced that two-way rail service had been restored at the site of the catastrophic accident on the night of June 2 involving three trains that killed at least 275 people and injured 1,200. According to the announcement, traffic in both directions was deemed suitable to return to normal levels.

Indian Railways – the world's fourth-largest railway network – operates around 14,000 trains per day with 8,000 locomotives on an extensive track system spanning approximately 64,000 km. Transporting over 21 million passengers daily places immense pressure on the railway network of the world's most populous nation. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has spearheaded a $30 billion modernization of the railway infrastructure, aimed at boosting India's economy and connectivity.
