Vingroup proposes to build a 4 billion USD railway to Can Gio: Ho Chi Minh City reviews planning to carry out the project sooner

On March 21, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport and Public Works sent an urgent dispatch to the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction to review, research, update, and add the railway route connecting the city center to Can Gio district to the project to adjust the general planning of Ho Chi Minh City until 2040, with a vision to 2060.

According to the conclusion announcement on March 19 of the Government Office at the 16th meeting of the State Steering Committee for important national projects and works, key to the transport sector, the Prime Minister requested Ho Chi Minh City to urgently organize research and implementation of urban railway projects (subway) to Can Gio and Ho Chi Minh City to Long Thanh International Airport.

At the same time, call on capable investors and contractors to participate in the investment and report to the Prime Minister in April 2025.

In addition, the Prime Minister's decision approving the planning of Ho Chi Minh City for the period 2021 - 2030, with a vision to 2050, established a potential planning for the urban railway line connecting the city center to Can Gio district (route 12).

The route is about 48.7km long, starting from Nguyen Van Linh Street (between the intersection with Nguyen Thi Thap Street and Ly Phuc Man Street, District 7) - Nguyen Luong Bang - Rung Sac and the end point is located on a 39ha land adjacent to the Can Gio coastal urban tourism project.

On March 17, Vingroup sent a document to the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee and the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport and Public Works regarding the proposal to invest in a high-speed railway connecting the city center with Can Gio. The proposed route plan has been established in the Ho Chi Minh City planning for the period 2021 - 2030, with a vision to 2050.

According to the proposal of Vingroup Corporation, the project has a scale of double track, 1,435mm gauge/track, elevated, infrastructure designed with a speed of 250km/h, axle load of 17 tons/axle.

Two depots are expected to be located in District 7 on a 20ha plot of land and a 39ha plot of land, Long Hoa commune, Can Gio district.

In terms of passenger capacity, the train can carry 30,000 - 40,000 people/direction/hour. The project preparation and implementation phase is from 2025 to 2028.

Therefore, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport and Public Works requested the Department of Construction to preside over and coordinate with the consulting consortium and related units to review, research, update and add this railway line to the city's master plan; report to the City People's Committee for consideration, send to the Ministry of Construction for appraisal, and submit to the Prime Minister for approval according to regulations.

At the same time, the project to build a railway connecting the center to Can Gio district was added to the list of investment projects before 2030 in the decision approving the adjusted planning project of Ho Chi Minh City until 2040, with a vision to 2060.

"This is to have enough legal basis to organize research on the urban railway project from the center connecting to the Can Gio coastal tourist urban area, calling for capable investors to participate in investment according to the Prime Minister's direction," the dispatch of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport and Public Works stated.
