Consecutive incidents of violence have caused damage to the health and spirit of students. Children’s behavior is not only the responsibility of the school but also the responsibility of the family and society.
A series of incidents on the eve of Tet
With the explosion of the Internet, videos recording school violence incidents are now easily found online, and even kept for a long time, causing even deeper trauma not only to the victims but also to the victims' families, friends, witnesses, and participants in the incident... This has caused public outrage as well as concern about the increasing hooliganism and aggression of the subjects. The victims in these incidents are often individuals or groups of students who are subjected to physical violence or other forms of verbal and physical violence by another group of students...
On December 17, a clip was circulated on social media recording a scene where a male student was walking in the schoolyard when his friends blocked his way, repeatedly punching him in the face and kicking him in the stomach. The incident only stopped when the male student collapsed to the ground. At the time of the incident, many other students witnessed it, but no one intervened. The two male students were later confirmed to be in grade 10 at Thanh Hoa Industrial College.
Also circulating on social media in late December were two clips recording a group of students wearing gym uniforms with the name of Phu Quoi Secondary School - High School (Phu Quoi Commune, Long Ho District) beating up two other female students wearing the same uniform as Loc Hoa Secondary School (Loc Hoa Commune, Long Ho District), also in Vinh Long Province. The incident occurred in a deserted area, the two female students were pulled down by their hair, punched and kicked repeatedly, and could only hold their heads and endure the beating. There were many other students around but no one intervened, one person used his phone to record the fight.
Previously, an 11th grade female student in Thanh Son village (Trung Chinh commune, Nong Cong district, Thanh Hoa province) was beaten by a group of schoolmates, causing a broken cervical vertebrae. The examination results showed that the total percentage of body damage at the time of examination was 23%.
On November 28, a 10th grade student at An Bien High School (Thu Ba town, An Bien district, Kien Giang province) was beaten by a group of 4 9th grade students, resulting in hospitalization.
On November 11, after the flag-raising ceremony at Nguyen Hue Secondary School (Dak Mil District, Dak Nong Province), a student told a friend about a fight with the homeroom teacher, so the students got into a fight, causing two female students to be hospitalized.
More alarmingly, school violence is not only occurring in older students but has now spread to primary schools. Recently, a clip of a 5th grade student at Phuoc Tan Primary School (Bien Hoa City, Dong Nai) being beaten by a group of friends due to a conflict was posted on Facebook. The incident occurred at a house rented by the homeroom teacher near the school for the students to have lunch and then go to class in the afternoon. At that time, the teacher was eating outside so she did not know what was happening. At that time, a student took out his phone to record it, and then his parents discovered it and posted it on Facebook, and then the school found out.
The continuous incidents of group beatings occurred with a painfully familiar image that many other students witnessed but no one intervened, some even cheered, some took out their phones to record. Not only did the injuries stop there, many incidents also caused serious consequences, affecting the long-term health of the victims. In particular, the mental pain and depression of the victims due to anxiety, resentment, etc. will not only last for a few days or months but can follow them for the rest of their lives. Especially, there are cases of bullying and fighting that occur several months after the school or family discovers them, so the damage to the victims cannot be measured, and without timely and effective psychological intervention, it will create long-term negative effects on the children.
Looking more broadly, the consequences of school violence are not only pain and obsession for the education sector but also for the whole society. Today, we are living in a flat world, where just a few actions on the internet are images of violence not only of strangers but also of our own children, friends, relatives or ourselves who have suffered, spreading online, anyone can see and comment, judge. At school age, when they are still not mature enough to understand all the good and right things in life, and do not have enough skills to behave harmoniously in all relationships, the impact of these incidents will be more serious, even affecting a child's future if not intervened and prevented properly and promptly.
Increase resistance to school violence
Warning about school violence with behaviors including physical violence, mental violence and technological violence... Dr. Le Thi Thanh Thuy (Vietnam Youth Academy) said that families and schools need to equip children with skills to respond and handle situations as well as skills to protect themselves when violence occurs. Depending on the level of violence, there will be different ways to handle it. But most importantly, there needs to be the cooperation of the whole society, especially the companionship and close follow-up of teachers, parents and related parties.
In particular, schools need to develop a Code of Conduct, have prevention programs, and provide skills for students. In particular, the principal, as the leader, plays a role in building a disciplined, loving, responsible, and innovative school. Recently, the principal of Trung Hieu Secondary School, Vung Liem District (Vinh Long Province) was disciplined with a warning for not properly performing his responsibilities as a principal, allowing school violence to occur many times without a solution, not thoroughly handling the situation, and lacking measures to support and accompany the family.
Ho Chi Minh City is the first locality to develop and apply a set of criteria for happy schools. Among them, there are some contents related to school violence that are considered positive and progressive views on education. Specifically, the set of criteria guides and reports are a record of the entire learning journey and the entire journey of each person. Therefore, teachers need to record the advantages, while disadvantages and shortcomings are only a part of student life. When assessing shortcomings, schools need to consider the entire monitoring process after coordinating with families and supporting students. It is necessary to carefully consider the wording when commenting on student reports. Schools keep records related to student discipline according to regulations. Limit recording disciplinary measures on student reports.
However, looking at the current reality, school violence is causing many difficulties in educating students in schools because no matter how many humane lessons teachers teach, how many beautiful words they say, when witnessing brutal fights caused by their own classmates, schoolmates, etc., students will certainly be seriously affected.
Mr. Ho Tan Minh - Chief of Office of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City said that when an incident occurs, the industry's viewpoint is to resolutely handle it thoroughly. In particular, it is necessary to carefully consider multi-dimensional information, consider the responsibility of relevant management agencies and current leaders... In addition, it is necessary to carry out educational work because school-age students with interactions from social networks and modern society have many issues that require the education industry to put the responsibility of building school culture as a central task. How to make students happy when going to school is an important criterion.
According to Minister of Education and Training Nguyen Kim Son, to eliminate school violence, the ones who have to do the most work are the students. If they study well, live with ambition, have ideals, know how to love, care, and share, such people will certainly not practice violence against others. If they have enough skills to be able to solve their own problems, help their friends solve their problems, then violence has no place in schools. If they have the skills to know how to select information, know how to use social networks, express their opinions, then there is no place for the negative influence of social networks... Self-cultivation, love, skills, and attitudes are very important things that students need to do to push back school violence. Whoever does their job well, from principals, homeroom teachers, and psychological counselors to do their best; school culture must be done well; If the law is enforced… we will gradually push back school violence and build a happy environment - which is the real environment we currently have.
Dr. Hoang Trung Hoc - Head of Psychology - Education Department, Academy of Educational Management:
Need to speak up against school violence
Recently, the problem of school violence has become alarming, considering the number of cases, the dangerous nature and the level of impact. The cause of each case is different, but in some cases, it is not the first time the victim has been beaten or bullied, but because of fear of retaliation, being beaten... they remain silent and do not fight back, leading to increasingly serious bullying behaviors. Therefore, in the case of school violence, do not advise your students or children to be patient. We do not approve of children using violence against others. We also do not encourage the use of violence to control violence, but we need to teach children how to respond positively. That is, knowing how to defend themselves, knowing how to speak up against violence instead of enduring and becoming victims.
