The Ho Chi Minh City Institute for Development Studies recently held a national scientific conference on the topic "Promoting cultural resources to build and develop a creative city in Ho Chi Minh City". Researchers discussed whether AI (artificial intelligence) can replace the creative role of the author?
AI cannot have emotions
The development of AI has helped to narrow the gap between humans and technology. Currently, AI has entered the field of art, being able to create works of art such as paintings or photography with very high quality in just a few seconds. For screenwriting, stage authors are facing the challenge of whether AI will replace script writers?

According to People's Artist Tran Ngoc Giau - Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City Theater Association, the artist's perspective is from emotions, a philosophy of life originating from the heart, this is very special, so no matter how advanced it is, AI still cannot replace human thinking and emotions. "AI is just a summary framework, it is complete in a mechanical way. Recognizing a script from AI is not difficult, because it is only structured according to a formula" - People's Artist Tran Ngoc Giau said.
Experts say that AI cannot create completely new things, it is only strong in combining existing things. In technological terms, AI is natural selection - it will retain those who are truly capable, thereby creating "unique" and creative works. Researchers point out that AI cannot apply the creativity that is typical of screenwriting in theater genres, it can only collect available meaningless lines and cannot create a breakthrough in the writing style of a professional author.
Meritorious Artist Ca Le Hong acknowledged: "Theater is a comprehensive art form with its own unique characteristics. The author has many psychological and emotional intelligence characteristics that AI finds difficult to understand and do. Currently, AI cannot replace humans in artistic creation due to shortcomings in emotions and feelings."
Good data source for stage
According to insiders, reality shows that from photography, painting to music, literature, AI can do everything with just simple commands in an incredible amount of time. But with theater works, especially scriptwriting with its own unique characteristics, works created by AI can hardly replace scripts written by authors.
People's Artist Tran Minh Ngoc said: "AI is just a machine that synthesizes and shuffles the data sources it collects to fulfill human requests. Artworks created by humans are not created by applying formulas. Artistic creation has no limits or formulas. Just as there is no predetermined path to reach the destination in art, especially for theater people."
Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thi Minh Thai added: "Society is constantly changing, with the development of science and technology, it is time for those who work in the performing arts to be serious about the works they create. Let's compete with industrial, stereotyped works of AI with works created from the vibrations of the heart, from experiences and seriousness, passion for true art."
Experts affirm that AI should only be used for reference and information research to serve the purpose of research and artistic creation; AI cannot replace humans in creating new character images. Theater professionals should not overuse or rely too much on AI because that will lose their own style and identity.
“What AI creates is always soulless and emotionless and cannot be put on stage. It can only be a useful information channel in the creative process for theater makers to find materials when staging or for authors to refer to when delving into specialized fields of society” - People's Artist Tran Minh Ngoc analyzed.
