Thanh Hoa's special seedless lychee, which was just released to the market for the first time by a business, has 'sold out' despite the price reaching nearly a million VND per kilogram.
According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Thanh Hoa province, for the first time, more than one ton of seedless lychee in the province has been exported to the Japanese and UK markets by Ho Guom - Song Am High-Tech Agriculture Company Limited. Of which, 500 kg were exported to Japan, the remaining 600 kg were exported to the UK.
This is an important milestone for the agricultural sector of Thanh Hoa province, when a type of lychee originating from abroad that has just been tested has produced high commercial results.
This lychee variety was selected and developed by the above company in collaboration with the Agricultural Genetics Institute, and tested in Ngoc Lac district with an area of about 30 hectares in Nguyet An commune, following VietGAP and GlobalGAP processes to meet export needs.

According to a survey by VnExpress , in the Japanese market, domestic seedless lychees are sold at 4,500-5,000 yen per kilogram, equivalent to 750,000-840,000 VND per kilogram. Meanwhile, Vietnamese lychees exported through Japan are sold exclusively at a supermarket chain specializing in Vietnamese goods with a retail price of 1,700 yen per 500 grams (290,000 VND) and a wholesale price of 3,300 yen per kilogram (550,000 VND) from 5 kg.
In the Vietnamese market, a representative of Ho Guom - Song Am High-Tech Agriculture Company Limited said that it is selling at a price of 250,000-800,000 VND per kilogram depending on packaging and quantity. The company is distributing in boxes, such as a special box priced at 800,000 VND per kilogram, a 2-kg box priced at 550,000 VND; a 1-kg box priced at 280,000 VND.
The 800,000 VND/kg variety is made from lychees selected from farms that grow according to strict standards, with a low sugar content and simple sugar content, making it suitable for diabetics on a diet, with 3 times more trace elements than normal lychees. Currently, the first 200 boxes of this variety have been sold out after a few days of opening.
"This price is high but compared to imported goods from Japan, the price is still very attractive," said a representative of the above company.
Previously, when Vietnam did not have seedless lychees, this type was mostly hand-carried from Japan to Vietnam by fruit traders, priced up to 5 million VND per kilogram, 150 times more expensive than Vietnamese goods.

According to this enterprise, in Thanh Hoa, the company has more than 1,000 hectares planned for growing seedless lychee trees. Currently, about 30 hectares are bearing fruit and the harvest output from now until the end of June is about 15 tons.
Regarding seedless lychee, in 2019, Bac Giang also brought seedless lychee varieties to plant in Tan Son commune (Luc Ngan district) with more than 500 trees. In the 2022 lychee crop, seedless lychees have borne fruit and achieved good quality.
Speaking to VnExpress, Mr. Le Ba Thanh, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Bac Giang province, said that this year the yield of seedless lychee will be higher than last year and the quality will be good. However, the province is still in the research process and has not yet allowed mass planting.
Seedless lychee is a variety imported from abroad. When ripe, the lychee is bright red, has juicy, crispy flesh, and a rich sweet taste. The advantages of this lychee variety are reduced care, no stem borer, good preservation, and high economic value.
