Asking others to change seats, take off their shoes or cut their toenails or fingernails on an airplane are actions that many people consider to be the most impolite.
The latest survey, conducted in October by Skyscanner, a travel company based in Scotland that serves over 100 million people every month, revealed the most offensive behaviours of passengers on planes. The survey was conducted by thousands of people from around the world who had travelled in the past three years.
Ask the guest to change seats
31% of passengers said they were “very annoyed” when another passenger asked to change seats. Many refused to change seats because they did not like it, while others agreed but were unhappy.
Anais Monique, a former flight attendant, said passengers should notify the flight crew in the event of a seat dispute.
Recline the seat
More than 30% of respondents said that passengers should avoid reclining their seats on planes. Many said they felt bad for the person sitting in front of them for reclining their seats throughout the flight. However, reclining your seat (except when the flight attendant asks you to put it upright) is a passenger’s right. Others said that keeping your seat upright throughout a flight, especially on long flights, is “unrealistic.”

Occupy both armrests of the chair
More than 30% of respondents said it was “uncomfortable” when the person sitting next to them put both arms on the arms of the chair. The question of who should have both arms of the chair is always a controversial one.
In many sharings of etiquette experts and travel bloggers, the person sitting in the middle should be the one to put both arms on the seat. The reason is that this person has the narrowest space while the person sitting outside has more comfortable leg room and the person sitting next to the window can lean against the wall of the plane to sleep.
Not everyone agrees with this suggestion. Some passengers believe that everyone in the same row should take turns using the armrest.
Take off your shoes and socks.
35% of respondents said they felt uncomfortable when passengers took off their shoes. Many flight attendants said that planes are not the cleanest places in the world. Therefore, passengers should wear shoes instead of walking barefoot on the floor.
Taking off socks and cutting fingernails and toenails on a flight is also something that makes more than 40% of respondents frown and grimace.

Chat with the person sitting next to you
This action was not considered "friendly" by many people but "rude". Nearly 40% of respondents said that passengers should avoid talking to strangers. If they do, they should not talk too much because many people want privacy or rest instead of chatting.
Turn on speakerphone to talk on the phone
About 42% of survey respondents said they “feel annoyed” when passengers make phone or video calls on speakerphone because it creates a noisy environment. In August, an American Airlines pilot made headlines for his speech on airplane manners. He said passengers should use headphones and avoid playing anything on their phones at maximum volume because it would disturb others. This opinion was widely shared.
