Although best known for his mantra “Move fast and break things,” Mark Zuckerberg has constantly changed his management style and shared many management secrets during his 20 years of steering Facebook into one of the largest companies in the world.

Here are some of the most notable tips from Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

Lean

Zuckerberg declared 2023 to be “the year of efficiency” for Meta. He wants to “flatten” the organizational structure by removing some layers of middle management. He doesn’t want an organization where managers manage each other.

Meta will cut 11,000 jobs in November 2022 and another 10,000 in March 2023.

According to Insider , Zuckerberg's effort to streamline Meta is continuing, and even senior executives are feeling the heat. Facebook's parent company is looking to further reduce the number of vice presidents. In 2023, the company will have about 300 individuals holding the vice president position.

No shirking of responsibility

One of Zuckerberg's most controversial tips is that business leaders don't shirk responsibility. Basically, he says, founders should make as many decisions and be involved in as many things as possible.

Zuckerberg said this is something he’s become more confident about over time. “It’s not going to be great in the short term, but you just have to learn, unlearn, and try again. Do good work for a long time,” he said earlier this year.

Read before meeting

Like Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, Zuckerberg is particular about meetings. “I actually like to have a rule… that every hour of a meeting, the team should send me a report in advance,” he told Forbes. “I like to have at least an hour to read the material and think. Then I like to have at least an hour to follow up with different people after the meeting.”

Execute, execute and execute

Instead of worrying too much about competitors and ideas, focus on execution, Zuckerberg said. “I think most companies probably focus too much on competitors and maybe even too much on ideas,” he said in the Forbes interview. “I think ultimately what makes companies great is the ability to execute relentlessly and do things efficiently and do them rigorously. They just get better and better.”

Move fast

In 2022, Meta announced a new set of company values, one of which is “move fast.” This is a shortened version of Zuckerberg’s most famous quote, “move fast and break things.”

Previously, in 2014, Facebook's motto was "move fast with stable infrastructure" .

Facebook defines moving fast as “acting with urgency and not waiting until next week to do something you can do today” and “continuously working to accelerate your highest priority initiatives by methodically removing roadblocks.”
