The results were released after the research team interviewed and surveyed 12,505 teachers in the three localities in September and October, and interviewed 132 education managers and teachers at all levels.

Only 19% of teachers do not face financial pressure

Interview results show that since the adjustment of the basic salary from 1.8 million VND to 2.34 million VND (applied from July 1), teachers' income has improved significantly.

However, the survey results still show that the income of the teaching profession only meets an average of 51.87% of the monthly spending needs of teachers' families for the group without additional jobs. For the group of teachers with additional jobs, it only meets about 62.55%.

Teachers with less than 10 years of experience assessed that their teaching income only met an average of 45.7% of their family's monthly spending needs.

The assessment of the level of financial pressure (income from teaching is not enough to cover living expenses) of teachers has a fairly high average score of 3.61/5 (5 is very stressful).

Preschool teachers have no time for themselves or their families.

According to survey results, 71.83% of teachers are overloaded with work, this rate is 87.65% for preschool teachers.

Meanwhile, nearly 70% of preschool teachers do not have time for physical education and recreation activities, and 46% of teachers at other levels spend less than 10% of their day on physical education and recreation activities.

Teachers' time spent on family care accounts for only 15.81% of their time. For preschool teachers, this figure is only about 1/3 of the average.

Of these, 44% of teachers said they were under some to very much pressure; only 19% of teachers said they were comfortable and very comfortable, with no financial pressure.

In addition to financial pressure, teachers also face pressure from professional activities such as preparing lectures, department meetings, other administrative and social tasks; pressure related to regulations on teacher standards, attitudes towards students, etc.

The biggest pressure comes from parents

In particular, the study shows that teachers are under the greatest pressure from parents. Up to 70.21% of teachers said that they are under pressure or very much pressure from parents. At the same time, 40.63% of teachers said that they had considered changing careers due to mental violence from parents.

In-depth interviews with teachers in the school board, subject group leaders and teachers at all levels all shared the same opinion that currently the pressure from parents on teachers is at an alarming level.

One of the pressures teachers are facing (Photo from the study).

Many parents set expectations too high, often deeply interfere in teaching, and even put pressure on grades.

They constantly monitor, ask questions and request detailed reports on their children's learning situation via Zalo or Facebook groups...

More worryingly, some teachers reported that some parents had seriously offended teachers, such as coming directly to school to quarrel, curse, or even assault teachers when their children were criticized, warned, or did not get high scores.

Many teachers also face threats or defamation on social networks.

The survey results also showed that 63.57% of teachers expressed their desire to legalize extra teaching, including tutoring at home and online tutoring, to increase their income from their own abilities.

Although their income still does not meet their living needs and they face a lot of pressure at work, 94.23% of teachers said they continue to pursue their career because they love their job and their students.

Nearly 50% of teachers said they stay in the profession because of reasonable income and good benefits.

Create a legal corridor to protect teachers

From the results of practical research, VNU-HCM hopes that the agencies drafting the Law on Teachers will pay attention to and focus on the following issues:

First, salary and allowance policy for teachers: Basic salary according to the teacher salary scale is ranked highest in the administrative career salary scale system (as proposed in the draft Law on Teachers).

This is a breakthrough regulation, contributing to increasing income for teachers, especially young teachers and preschool teachers, so that they can work with peace of mind and contribute to education.

Second, it is necessary to create a solid and comprehensive legal corridor to protect teachers from pressure; protect the image of teachers in the new context. Reduce the retirement age for preschool teachers; at the same time, extend the working age for teachers with doctoral degrees, associate professors, and professors.

Third, regarding regulations on extra teaching and learning, it is necessary to build a clear legal corridor and a transparent mechanism for extra teaching; ensuring harmony with teachers' salary policies.

Fourth, build a reward and treatment policy worthy of teachers' contributions.
