According to information posted on the Telegram channel of General Apty Alaudinov, commander of the Akhmat special forces of the Russian army, this offensive campaign began on March 8.
He said that Russian units, including fighters from various military formations, launched an active offensive. He said the speed of the army's advance proved the success of the operation.
Commander Alaudinov noted that Ukrainian forces, facing a strong Russian offensive, are losing control of fortified areas and are retreating, abandoning their positions.
The official report from the Russian Defense Ministry has not yet provided details on the progress of the operation, but information from Mr. Alaudinov confirmed news from war correspondents as well as many Telegram channels about significant changes on the Kursk front.
The offensive in the Kursk region is part of a broader strategy by the Russian military to push Ukrainian forces from territory they have held since August 2024.
On the morning of August 6, 2024, Ukrainian units, with the support of armored vehicles and artillery, attacked Kursk province on the Russian border, controlling more than 1,000 square kilometers of territory there.
Analysts are divided on Kiev’s Kursk offensive. Some see it as more of a political move than a strategic one. They argue that holding onto the Russian-held territories will cost Ukraine more than it will benefit it.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has tasked his military with regaining control of the region. By November, Russian troops had recovered half of the territory controlled by Ukraine, and since the start of the year Moscow has stepped up its counter-offensive, using additional reserves to push back Ukrainian forces completely ahead of potential peace talks.
According to Ukrainian sources, Russian forces have increased pressure with heavy bombing and artillery attacks, significantly complicating the resupply and rotation of Ukrainian units.
Military observer Yuriy Podolyaka said Russian units were trying to advance towards the center of the town of Sudzha, seeking to encircle the remaining Ukrainian units there.
Despite Ukrainian resistance, the Russian army still holds the initiative. During the night, Ukraine attempted to organize a counterattack in the Goncharovka area to break the Russian advance, but this attempt failed.
Meanwhile, Russian units took advantage of the darkness to consolidate previously captured lines and close in on Ukrainian forces trying to break out of the encirclement in the Martynovka and Malaya Loknya areas.
Some opinions say that Ukraine may only hold on to Kursk for about 2 more weeks.
However, the Ukrainian army denied that Russia had made a major breakthrough in Kursk. Kiev asserted that it was causing Moscow great losses in this area.
