According to statistics, people are expected to download 143 billion apps by 2026 alone. This is a huge number, so it is not surprising that bad guys have identified app stores as an ideal “hub” for spreading viruses.

Several apps have been confirmed to be infected, including Wuta Camera and Max Browser. There are also WhatsApp mods from unofficial sources that carry malware, as well as a Spotify mod called Spotify Plus. The report also mentions several infected mods of games like Minecraft and Melon Sandbox.

According to the report, the malware started appearing on Wuta Camera from version 6.4.2.148 until it was discovered and removed in version 6.4.7.138.

Meanwhile, Max Browser has been removed from the app store, but it has been downloaded and installed over a million times and contains the Necro loader from version 1.2.0 onwards.

The Necro malware is designed to generate revenue for the attacker by running background processes on the victim's phone. It automatically opens and clicks on ads using invisible windows, thus greatly affecting the overall performance of the device.

In an interview with Fox, Google claimed that all known infected apps have been removed and that most users should be protected by Google Play Protect, the default antivirus software on most Android devices.
