YouTube lowers monetization standards

YouTube has just updated its policies for its Partner Program (YPP), lowering standards and opening up new ways for content creators to make money.

YouTube lowers monetization standards

Accordingly, the new standard allows YouTube users to enable monetization when they reach 500 followers, half the previous limit. Many other regulations have also been relaxed, such as users only need to watch videos for a total of 3,000 hours, down 1,000 hours from before. The number of views for Shorts on demand videos has also decreased from 10 million to 3 million.

One notable change in YouTube’s policy update is that users only need to upload at least 3 videos every 90 days to participate in monetization. This change benefits content creators who cannot continuously produce many videos despite attracting millions of views.

These relaxed standards have been adopted in the US, UK, Canada, Taiwan and South Korea.

Once creators meet the requirements, they can apply to join YPP and gain access to monetization tools like Super Thanks, Super Chat, and Super Stickers, as well as channel memberships. Users will also have the ability to promote their own merchandise on YouTube Shopping.

In the race to attract content creators, a number of platforms have lowered their monetization standards. Earlier this month, TikTok introduced a paid video feature called Series to creators with over 10,000 followers. However, users who meet certain requirements can still participate in content production using this feature even if they have over 1,000 followers.

The new rules from both platforms are aimed at making it easier for small content creators to receive revenue from their followers and fans.

YouTube began sharing ad revenue from Shorts with creators in February. In its Q4 2022 earnings report, YouTube said the Shorts platform had surpassed 50 billion views per day.
