Many people who install a YouTube ad blocker on their browser will be detected and not shown videos, instead receiving a large on-screen notification, asking them to continue watching ads, or try a paid Premium plan.
YouTube warns users to remove ad blockers |
Speaking to The Verge , YouTube's head of communications Christopher Lawton said the platform is working to crack down on ad blockers. YouTube confirmed that it has been doing so in a few markets since June and is expanding globally.
“Using YouTube ad blockers is a violation of the platform’s terms of service. Ads support creators around the world and allow billions of people to access the content they love on YouTube,” Lawton added.
However, this move by YouTube is facing a series of mixed reactions. Many users believe that this social networking platform is inserting too many ads into the content of videos and using many different methods to force users to pay.
YouTube's new move is facing mixed reactions. |
Ad blocker AdGuard said it was seeing around 6,000 uninstalls per day on the Chrome browser, a number that spiked to 11,000 in mid-October and hit a record of around 52,000 uninstalls on October 18.
However, after users realized that the paid version of AdGuard could bypass the Youtube platform's "barrier", the number of software installations increased to 60,000 in one day.
Not stopping there, some Youtube users also seek third-party solutions such as Youtube Vanced or Newpipe. However, this also puts them at risk of malware.
