In recent years, Mung hamlet, Hop Phong commune (Cao Phong) has gradually become an attractive tourist destination, attracting thousands of visitors to the "windy land" Cao Phong to check-in at the colorful flower hills, enjoy the fresh, cool air and experience the unique cultural identity of Muong Thang land.

Tourists experience staying in a stilt house and making a campfire in Mung hamlet, Hop Phong commune (Cao Phong).

"Rough gem" attracts tourists

Mung Hamlet is about 10km from the commune center. Previously, the road to the hamlet was steep and difficult to travel. The main source of income for the people was growing corn, cassava, and rice on terraced fields or relying on the forest to survive. Thanks to the attention of the state and authorities at all levels, Mung Hamlet has now transformed from a remote area into a community tourism destination that attracts visitors.

A 2-hour drive from Hanoi and about 30km from Hoa Binh city on Highway 6, the road to Mung hamlet has now been concreted for convenient travel. Since 2021, a number of investors in Hanoi have come to Mung hamlet to develop tourism, cooperating with the villagers to open homestays and grow flowers on terraced fields, which were once only used for rice cultivation or left fallow after the harvest. The colorful flower fields, blooming brightly all year round, have become a highlight attracting a large number of tourists to check-in and experience.

In spring, nearly 500 cherry blossom trees planted on the hills and along both sides of the road stretching around the terraced fields bloom, dyeing the entire hamlet pink. In summer, people switch to planting colorful butterfly flowers. In November, wild sunflowers bloom on both sides of the road leading to the hamlet. In December, people plant mustard flowers covering the flower hills in yellow. Thus, visitors can come to Mung hamlet all year round to enjoy the flower seasons.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Khanh Ha from Dong Anh, Hanoi shared: "The first time I came to Xom Mung, the flower fields were more beautiful than I imagined. The climate is cool, the traditional dishes prepared by the locals are very delicious. I will come back and introduce my friends and relatives to travel here."

Preserving cultural identity to develop sustainable tourism

With the potential to develop a smokeless industry, since 2023, Hop Phong commune has implemented the community-ecotourism model of Mung hamlet. Some homestays have been invested and developed to serve tourists for accommodation and relaxation such as: Mung Retreat Glamping, Nha Tim Homestay, Thung May Wellness Retreat...

Mr. Nguyen Van Hai, owner of Thung May Wellness Retreat homestay, shared: "After many years working in the capital, I decided to return to build a homestay to develop in my hometown. I want to build a space for tourists to "heal", away from the noise and dust of the city and learn more about the cultural identity of the Muong ethnic group".

In Mung hamlet, in addition to taking photos at the flower hill, visitors can visit the orange garden - a Cao Phong specialty, directly pick and enjoy oranges right in the garden. On sunny days, visitors can hunt clouds and watch the sunset; experience staying in a stilt house, enjoy the unique cuisine of the Muong people such as hill chicken, local pig, bitter bamboo shoots, sticky rice... In the evening, the homestay has a campfire and art performances by the art troupe of the Muong people here.

In addition, many other services have been opened to meet the needs of exploration and experience of tourists in Mung hamlet such as: Traditional costume rental, souvenir stalls, local products... Thanks to these activities, the lives of the people are not only improved, but also create opportunities for rich cultural exchange, opening up a direction for sustainable and long-term livelihood development for the community.

Comrade Pham Ngoc Nhat, Head of the Department of Culture, Science and Information of Cao Phong district, said: Mung hamlet has over 98% of Muong ethnic people. To develop sustainable tourism, authorities at all levels have built a tourism cooperative in the hamlet, organized training courses on tourism skills for people to develop Mung hamlet into a community tourism destination. The district also has a plan to restore ancient stilt houses to preserve the traditional culture of the Muong ethnic group, thereby attracting tourists to explore and experience, contributing to promoting local socio-economic development.
