Hundreds of millions of Chinese people are crazy about durian, spending billions of dollars each year to buy it. Meanwhile, Vietnam has made a fortune from exporting it, with an estimated 2.5 billion dollars in revenue from selling the “king of fruits” in the first nine months of this year – an unprecedented record.
In 2023, durian export turnover will reach 2.24 billion USD. Accordingly, durian will become a new billion-dollar fruit (previously dragon fruit), and at the same time top the list of fruits and vegetables with the highest export turnover in the year.

China is the main export market, accounting for 96.8% of the total export turnover of Vietnam's durian industry last year.

On the afternoon of September 27, sharing with VietNamNet, Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen - General Secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, informed that durian exports earned 2.5 billion USD in just 9 months of this year according to the association's preliminary estimate. That is, the export turnover of the "king of fruits" has broken the record of 2.24 billion USD for the whole year of 2023.

“It has only been 9 months, but 2.5 billion USD is a record amount for the durian industry, and also a record number for an exported fruit and vegetable,” he emphasized. Of which, the export turnover to the Chinese market alone is estimated at 2.3 billion USD.

According to Mr. Nguyen, Vietnam’s durian exports this year will certainly exceed the 3 billion USD mark. Because October is the harvest season for this fruit in large-production growing areas such as Gia Lai and Lam Dong. Off-season durian in the western provinces will also be harvested in the last months of this year.

This is also the time when competitors such as Thailand and Malaysia have finished their harvest season, so the price of Vietnamese durian will be very high.

Currently, the price of durian in growing areas purchased at the garden ranges from 42,000-95,000 VND/kg depending on the type. This price helps farmers earn very high profits from the billion-dollar fruit.

The director of a durian exporting company in Dak Lak said that this year's durian price is not as high as last year's but is more stable. This makes it much easier for businesses to purchase durian to pay for export orders.

This year, the company plans to export about 500 containers of fresh durian to the Chinese market. Currently, the company is focusing on purchasing goods to meet the needs of its partners.

Vietnamese durian is highly regarded for its quality compared to Thai products, and its prices are also more competitive. Thanks to that, the amount of durian exported has increased and there is still much room for development in the Chinese market, the director said.

Regarding the export of frozen durian, the leader of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association said: "Enterprises are completing procedures to apply for approval of growing area codes and packaging facilities to export this product to the Chinese market."

With the current progress, Mr. Nguyen expects to be able to export the first batches of frozen durian to the billion-people market next November.

Vietnam ranks third in the world in terms of durian area and output (nearly 1.2 million tons) after Indonesia (1.8 million tons) and Thailand (more than 2.32 million tons) by 2023.

Mr. Nguyen Quang Hieu - Deputy Director of the Plant Protection Department (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development) - said that every year China imports fresh durian worth 7 billion USD and this figure is expected to exceed 10 billion USD in the next few years.

In addition, China also spent $1 billion on frozen durian and is expected to increase rapidly over the years.

Notably, our country has officially exported fresh durian to China since mid-2022. Last August, Vietnam and China signed a protocol to export frozen durian to this market of more than 1.4 billion people.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development also calculated that frozen durian exports could reach a turnover of 400-500 million USD in 2024 - the first year after signing the protocol and will be included in the list of agricultural export products worth billions of USD in 2025.
