(VLO) According to the Southern Institute of Water Resources Research, the Mekong River basin, including the Mekong Delta, is being affected by the La Nina phenomenon and is forecast to continue affecting it until March 2025, after which it is likely to switch to neutral ENSO.
Specifically, saline intrusion at river mouths in the Mekong Delta region since the beginning of the dry season has appeared at a lower level than the average of many years, the dry season of 2023-2024. Particularly at Co Chien River and Hau River, saline intrusion has appeared higher than the average of many years.
At the Mekong River mouths, the highest salinity boundary of 4g/l has appeared from 42-60km, depending on the river mouth, compared to the largest salinity intrusion in the dry season of 2023-2024, it is 1-13km lower (Co Chien River alone is 2km higher) than in 2019-2020, it is 8-49km lower, compared to 2015-2016, it is 5-22km lower.
According to the Southern Institute of Water Resources Research, from now until the end of the dry season, the Mekong Delta will continue to experience saltwater intrusion during high tides, from February 24 to March 4, 2025; March 11 to March 15, 2025; March 30 to April 2, 2025.
In Vinh Long, according to the provincial Hydrometeorological Station, from 0-7am on February 25, the highest salinity at Binh Thuy estuary (Thanh Binh commune) was 4.2‰; Nang Am was 3.0‰; Quoi An was 2.1‰; Tich Thien was 2.4‰...
Forecast of impacts of saline intrusion: Co Chien River branch from the head of Thanh Binh commune to Chanh An commune; Mang Thit River from Quoi An estuary inward; Tra On River from Tich Thien commune to Tra On town, salinity on February 23-28 will likely adversely affect water sources for daily life, production and people's lives.
