(CLO) The King of Denmark, Frederik X, has just announced a new royal coat of arms to emphasize the close relationship between this country and Greenland, after President-elect Donald Trump wanted the US to control this island.
The new coat of arms, approved by King Frederik X last December, gives the polar bear and ram – the symbols of Greenland and the Faroe Islands – more prominence, each in a separate corner.

“The ram has been the symbol of the Faroe Islands since the 14th century, while the polar bear has been the official symbol of Greenland since the 1660s,” according to a statement on the official website of the Danish Royal Family.
Previously, these two symbols were shrunk and placed in a corner with three golden crowns – which represented the Kalmar Union between Denmark, Norway and Sweden from 1397 to 1523.
However, with the three countries now separate entities, the Danish Royal Family decided to abandon the crowns, considering them no longer relevant to the modern context.
In his first New Year's address since ascending the throne on January 14, 2024, King Frederik X affirmed: "We are one, from the Danish minority in Southern Schleswig – which lies outside the Kingdom – to Greenland and the Faroe Islands. We belong to each other."
Denmark's new coat of arms was unveiled as US President-elect Donald Trump once again called for the US to take control of Greenland, a proposal he made during his first term.
“For the sake of our national security and freedom around the world, the United States feels it is essential to own and control Greenland,” Mr. Trump declared.
Greenland, an autonomous territory of the Kingdom of Denmark, gained autonomy in 1979 but remains under Danish sovereignty.
Greenland's Prime Minister, Múte B. Egede, has spoken out strongly against the idea: “Greenland is ours. We are not for sale and will never be for sale. We cannot lose the fruits of our many years of struggle for freedom.”
Greenland is a geopolitical flashpoint due to its strategic location in the Arctic. Many countries, including China and Russia, have shown interest in the area, primarily for its natural resources and military interests.
